But I am walking out the door as soon as I finish posting this to call the police on an illegal, inside the city limits chicken farmer. Their rooster has kept myself and my boyfriend awake quite a few mornings now and I am DONE! If you do not keep cocks in city, then I have no problem with you. If you do, then you either have not considered your neighbors feelings or just do not care. I am an insomniac and an epileptic, any sleep I can get is good for my health, and this rooster has, due to more lack of sleep than I would have otherwise had, caused me at least a half dozen seizures in the last 2 weeks. This is a major health concern for me, and needs to stop, now. This is put here as nicely as my poor seizure ridden and sleep deprived brain can enunciate. I am completely against livestock of any kind, including poultry, inside city limits because of this experience. Before you get a cock inside city limits, at least think with compassion about your surrounding neighbors, unlike these poor, (about to have cops on them) sods.

Did you tell them this? They might be understanding of your situation and rehome their rooster in order to keep their flock of hens.

If not, then I can certainly understand your frustration.

I agree you should try talking to them about the roo first but I can't blame ya for calling the law if it is affecting your health. I love my chickens but i wouldn't be able to keep them in good concience if they were affecting someone's health..... Thank goodness I live in the country and all of my neighbors have chickens.

I had a silkie cock in a pen in the back of my yard near a neighbor. once he learned to crow I asked him. Hey is my bird bothering you? He responded yes actually he is waking me and the wife up. I immediatly appologized and moved him with in an hour of finding that out. Many of us dont realize and I am sure if you warned them first they would take the proper step to quiet him for you.

Personally I would ask first then call cops if they dont care to change the problem. Coming from a person who has been dealing with zoning it is no fun and would be avoided at all costs. Give them 1 chance if they fail then go ahead and bust them.

Yeah I agree if you didnt complian to the neighbor and give them the oppurtunity to correct the situation then I personally feel that you are being the unkind neighbor in the situation... Most if not all folks that I know of who have chickens in the city try very hard to bne kind to their neighbors.. i truly hope you do try to talk to them first...

My very bonded and truly inseparable roo and hen sleep in a well ventilated insulated building and I almost never let them out before 8 a.m., despite the fact that my neighbors have dogs barking relentlessly at times and seemingly could not care less about impact on their neighbors. With the insulation and being kept in until a 'decent' hour no one has to listen to my sweet roo crowing at the crack of dawn. Most of my neighbors love him but I make a point of assuming that not all would enjoy early a.m. crowing. There are solutions, if your neighbors are willing.

(p.s. In the winter when everyone's windows are closed and in the hot sumemr when windows are aagin closed and AC's on, it's easiest. The times when a roo guardian in an urban setting has to be especially vigilent are when the weather is great and folks have their windows open.... )

I went outside to find the cock and talk to his people first, after reading some replies here, and what do you know? He quit crowing as soon as I went out to look for him, and now, as I type is crowing again D: I cannot find him to talk to his people about him because he has some sort of ticked radar LOL.

Even if he wasn't crowing when you went out, I'm sure his owners know that he does it. Good for you for being willing to go talk it out. I hope they're reasonable and try to help you out because it sounds like you have legitimate concerns. I know I wouldn't want my neighbors to be unhappy with my little flock.
