You all are killin me here. Ducks are such cuteness! I cant believe the absolute joy they have brought to my life in just 7 short months. I watch them for hours.
Nobody told me all of the adorable things you have written in these posts. Watching them grow so fast from helpless ducklings into beautiful inquisitive birds. The nuzzling, the loss, the joy, the love and OMG the time &money Im willing to spend just to see them happy. To see that head bob, that tilted glance, Their excited chatter.
Nobody told me they would take over my life, and my yard, and I would not mind a bit. The dogs however are a little peeved.
Nobody told me I would freak out with every plastic scrap and metal findings they un earth in the yard.
Nobody told me my days of leaving unfinished projects and tools out in the yard were over.
Nobody told me I would be pulling out half of the landscaping because it is potentially dangerous....and putting in a very large pond
Nobody told me I would be planting my garden according to what the ducks like to eat.
Nobody told me my compost would consist of coffee grounds, poopy straw and broccoli bits. The ducks eat everything else.
Nobody told me I may never be eating peas again.
Nobody told me no matter how many containers of fresh water you put out for them or how high the dog water bucket is, they will find it and they will defile it.
Nobody told me that when they laid their first egg i would blow up Facebook like it was my own personal accomplishment.
Nobody told me every day is a joyful reminder of what is was like to be a child on easter. Finding and counting their eggs does not get old..
Nobody told me I would screen my duck babysitter better than I did my childrens'. Sad, yes, but true. I also take more pictures of my ducks than I did my kids.
Nobody told me I would be happy to stick my had into a bag of dried up worms, and enjoy it. (meal worms are a favourite here)
Nobody told me Drakes are little rapists. That was a shock. My poor girls.
Nobody told me the only thing a duck likes more than a big ol muddy hole to noodle in, is a clean bucket of water to wash up in. My flock will jump off their pond when they hear the hose running--moms doin' the chores-- as I dump, clean and fill each bucket of water, they trail behind me noodling in the pockets of mud I just made and messing up the fresh water. When we are done with the rounds, they get back on their pond. Hilarious.
Nobody told me I would be volunteering to help the neighbours with their yard work and bringing home all the snails I could collect, because I have run low on snails in my yard and the ducks love them so much.
I will likely try my hand at chickens someday. Today I am spoiled with the love of my ducks.
