No pine mulch!!!

You can rent a chipper, if you have branches or brush that needs chipping. It's not fun, but possible. I agree about checking with the arborists in your area.
Our town maintenance department will load chips from their tree trimming efforts into the back of our pickup truck, used to be free. Check there too.

Last time I couldn't find pine mulch I purchased cedar, which I now understand is not a good choice.
This is fine, probably not aromatic cedar and it's out in the open so even if it is it's not a big risk.
Tree trimming chippings are the best, but can be hard to acquire, just get the biggest chunkiest mulch you can find.

Will the chuncky stuff make it hard for my silkies and ducks to move about on it? Yeah there was no harm from the cedar the first time.

We only have huge trees, not a bunch of branches. No pickup to get a load of it was available unfortunately.

X2 On contacting tree services! It used to be easy to get them to dump here, I think more people are getting on to the wonders of wood chip mulch. I still have a pretty good sized pile but I’ve called to get more but so far nothing. Good luck!

Here I go again! I am getting my runs ready for winter and have muddy spots in need of mulch. My local home improvement stores all say they are having a hard time getting pine mulch. Home Depot said they have pine nuggets, but I have silkies in one run and don't want to make getting around more complicated than their clumsy feet already are, plus I have ducks (ducklings). Last time I couldn't find pine mulch I purchased cedar, which I now understand is not a good choice. My run that was put in was very open and had enough circulation, no one got sick from it. I don't want to make that mistake again, so here's the question! What other mulch can I safely use since I can't get pine? Thanks.
i used the pine nuggets in the run with my silkies and they weathered very well. I just recently used cypress mulch in the aviary side for the quail and so far, it is working very well too. (the cypress was actually a bit less expensive than the pine per bag)....first pic is pine nuggets, second is cypress mulch

I wouldn't think so. Did it the first time?

Don't hold your breath and make sure you have a good place to dump, or they may block your driveway.

Great! I can get pine nuggets and Cypress mulch but wasn't sure Cypress was safe as I couldn't find anything that mentioned it.

I don't need the shavings, I need the mulch like you put around trees, landscaping.

Call local tree companies (or check getchipdrop.com) and ask how much they'll charge to drop off a load - if you're lucky they'll do it for tips, or cost of gas. In my area they're quite eager to find people to offload chips on.
Most tree service companies will gladly dump a free truckload on your property. Otherwise they have to pay to dump at a recycling center. You could even call your municiple office to find out which company they employ. This way you know they are working locally. Its the best mulch ever!
