No Progress: Is Chicken Raising Just Endless Poop Clean Up With NO Rewards?

Thank you Ballerina Bird, I couldn't believe how much easier life became when I changed to the good straw with a deep litter system! The girls get SO excited when they see me coming with a new bale! It's like Christmas to them if I know their outdoor time is going to be limited, as in me going out of town for a few days, I will put a couple bales in there and don't have to worry about them picking at each other from boredom. It works very well for me, you just have to keep it dry!

I like that idea of giving them a bale of straw to entertain themselves with in the run! I might give that a try. My dirt floor run usually doesn't give me problems, but in the heat it is a little smelly no matter how much I clean.

Me too. I especially like the idea of the seedheads for nutrition and entertainment value. I'll have to try it. My floor is dirt, too. I don't have too much trouble with smell because it's generally pretty dry here and also I sprinkle a lot of DE around. But I often wonder if I wouldn't do better to provide some bedding. And when I can't be home they have to stay in the coop all day. It's pretty large and airy but boring, I'm sure.
