No Slope on nest box Ok??

Hi All,

I neglected the fact that the plans for the nest boxes I have built have slanted "roofs"

I did not do that, the are basically just wood boxes, will it be ok? When I put the nest boxes in the coop it has created a nice little area for them to stand and look out the window.

Should I try and rig up a slanted board? Or will what I have be ok? I read some posts of people always having slopes, but I cannot find out why.

I have worked so hard on the coop I cannot believe I "forgot" to measure for a slope.

Mine are the same. I've had no issues not being sloped. Plus it gave me a place for storage.

I think the only reason for slanted roofs on nest boxes is so that the chickens don't roost on top of them. Mine are just boxes as well, and I do have a hen that roosts on top of them every night.
But, it doesn't bother me, so I don't care.

My boxes are like that too. I thought I might go back and add a slope onto it, but one of my older girls likes to sleep up there. Yep, she poops there. I just add a layer of bedding on top of the boxes. Cleans up quick and easy. Once I even found an egg up there! I've found that everyone has there own way of doing things. There is no right or wrong. Just whatever works for you. Best of luck on your new coop!

I feel so much better now. Still gets into the 20's here in MI at night. Chicks are 5 weeks old, they seems to want a new space more than I want them out of the house

I may bring them out next week with a heat lamp, we will see how the weather is.

Thanks again for the comments on the nest box! I will leave mine "as-is"

yep... the slanted roofs are to prevent perching because most people don't want poop-covered nest boxes. One of mine will perch on anything ever since she was a tiny baby, so I am glad for the slanted roofs... however, if you don't mind a little perching and pooping then you're just fine with how they are now

The top of my nest boxes is flat and doubles as a droppings board for the roost

As long as you have a sufficiently wide board it works fine that way.

I would probably not let them just *roost* on the flat nestbox roof, personally, but, it is not like something horribly catastrophic will happen if you do.
