And when they get finished banning what smokers like to do they can work on banning something you like. Everyone does activities that others think are ignorant and in their minds should be banned. Where does it stop? After they ban everything and nobody can do anything the selfish people that wanted others activities banned will be the ones to blame. No I do not smoke but I support others right to do so.

All I care about controlling is what goes on within the boundaries of my own property. No one is allowed to smoke in my house. The smell is disgusting and it lingers and gets into everything...and I and my DH both grew up with chain smokers. Neither of us took up that habit. Good thing, too, because we don't have money for such things. Once, years ago, my inlaws came to visit and I found a notebook that I had sitting beside a recliner my FIL was in with some pages that had started to burn from a dropped butt. No way will I allow that again. My MIL died from smoking at 62, my BIL at just 54 years old is dying from emphysema, oxygen in one hand, cigarette in the other. Naturally, I do not want that smell when I'm eating in a restaurant, but we rarely go out these days so it's sort of a non-issue.
Kudos to those who have managed to break the habit! I realize how difficult this was for you.

Well said 1acrefarm. Slowly but surely one "bad" thing at a time the governement will control ever little thing we're allowed to do, and when we are allowed to do those things.

I think Diet soda should be banned, and then soda should be banned before noon. I think everyone should drink coffee only in the morning, no soda drinkers allowed.

(how stupid does that sound)

) my hubby and I never smoked in our own home even, we always went out because we never have liked that stale smell of smoke inside. Our smoking friends were fine with going outside with us to smoke, it was never a big deal - smokers are not evil they understand these things, just not the crazy laws and stupid taxes that are being imposed and singling them out.

I didn't think this thread was about banning smoking altogether, just in public places and outside the doorways of public places. I don't think smoking should be totally banned, just that certain people should be more considerate. Not all smokers are bad people, and I don't even think most of those who smoke outside doors or in restuarants are either. I think they just don't know how much it bothers non-smokers.

And they are already working on a sin tax for soda and other "sugary drinks".

Yep sin tax on sodas, soaps and personal items like shampoo to tampons/condoms are taxed here in this city. Weird, I know!

Congrats, Wildsky!

I quit 6 years, 8 months and 22 days ago.

While I still miss it and only like the smell of a newly lit cig, I would not dream of butting into someone else's personal business and legislating what they can and can't do. Ever try to "tell" a smoker to quit? Best to encourage and support rather than nag.

Wow congrats to you too! Funny how we remember so well the last one we had!

I'm just happy I don't have to go stand in the garage when its -20 to have a smoke

what a horrible adiction it is.

Nobody could tell me to quit I know that much, my hubby quit 10 years ago, but he never once told me I had to stop! He never once complained about the smell or anything like that.

Even though I no longer need to smoke, I still get angry when people demonize smokers like they're evil beings! Its so unfair and so far from the truth.

Congrats to both of you! I keep trying, but so far I'm still puffing away

I do try to be considerate of those that do not smoke. I do not stand outside of doors and smoke, but it bothers me that I cannot walk down the sidewalk while lit up. And when I am in a parking lot next to my car, or sitting on a park bench by myself, or walking down my street and someone gives me the evil eye, it irritates the heck out of me. It's rude.

Same here, we don't smoke in our house either. And in all the years I've been smoking I've never had another smoker complain when we all head outside to smoke. Some smokers really don't care about how awful the smell is to nonsmokers, but their are plenty of people that don't care about others, many of them nonsmokers...

I think there definitely are rude NON smokers as well, so this really does go both ways. I think everyone just needs to be considerate of everyone else
