Any new ideas to minimize feed wastage by baby chicks? I am using a plastic feeder with a screw on jar, on a paper plate. Any ideas besides raising it,?

I've made some stands in the past where it'd be out of scratch range but within their face only so they couldn't scratch. I know a feeder i recently grabbed has stands on it as well so as they start to scratch you can lift it versus having to have a tray. I've used the paper plate to much effectiveness in the past.Any new ideas to minimize feed wastage by baby chicks? I am using a plastic feeder with a screw on jar, on a paper plate. I do the same, find a large tray so at least its not all over, its just in the tray. It's natural for them to scratch at the feed and throw it out of the feeder. I haven't found a way to stop it, but it does help to put the feeder on a cookie sheet or similar tray - when the paper plate ceases to be large enough to contain the mess. Then I can sift through the mess and save most of the feed. Besides that, if anyone else has better ideas, I'm listening too.
You've got to put that waterer up on a platform of sorts. I used bricks to make a little pedestal, then arranged scraps of wood of various thickness around the bricks, kind of like stairsteps. No wood chips in the water, and even tiny chicks could climb up with no trouble. (I started with a very low platform, like a scrap of plywood, then raised it when I was certain they could climb.)Now if someone can give me advice on how to keep them from throwing pine shavings into their water I'm all ears![]()
