No way to unfollow conversations?

There is an unwatch conversation button, but it doesn't seem to do anything and I continue to get notifications.

I don't think that is what I'm looking for. I would like to be able to participate in the conversation but I don't want to see a notification every time someone comments.

I'm not exactly sure what notifications you're talking about but...
I do not get alerts every time someone replies to a PM.

Huh..neither of those boxes are checked for me and I still get notifications. I'm talking about the red box notification on the conversation icon, not emails.
