This makes no sense to me. If you don't want to be a part of a convo why not leave it?

For example. You're really busy and don't want to be bombarded with notifications but you still want to participate in the conversation at a later date.

You won't get a new notification if you don't check/clear the last notification received...so stop checking the notification alerts and you won't continue to get them.

I want to be able to check in, but only want notifications for important messages (like a new conversation). Just like I don't want notifications from a busy public thread that I want to participate in every once in a while.
