Hi all! We just got our first set of Wellies, but I’m a bit worried they might be little boys instead of the little girls - unfortunately we are not able to have roosters in my town.

These cuties are just over 3 weeks old, and I was hoping to get an opinion or two on whether I should start looking for a safe home for them in the next little bit as it’s not always easy to safely re-home gentlemen.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed these special babies are girls, or that it’s a bit too soon to tell yet! Thanks in advance for your input.

Thanks for getting back to me! I'll have to start preparing my kids for re-homing! :( We are already so attached! Why do they have to be sooooo sweet!?!?
If it helps, most all cockerels are sweet at this age. Once hormones kick in they change. Sometimes a lot, sometimes a little.

My 100% straight from the pit of Hades rooster was sweet when he was young. Then hormones kicked in and I couldn't enter the coop without a tennis racket.

Thanks for the kind words!

We are, unfortunately, no stranger to roosters. So far in our career adopting chickens, we’ve now had 5 cockerels (out of 12 total chickens, from places that guarantee 90% odds of getting a pullet). They’ve all been pretty darn sweet, even as they got a bit older.

We tried to keep one last year but our neighbors weren’t as fond of his noises as we were, and we had to re-home him within a couple of days following a visit from animal control. :(

I’m not sure what we are doing wrong - I research breeds and do my best to pick pullets so we don’t have to go through the process of attachment and then adoption, given that it’s pretty hard to find a home for roosters in my area and it must take a toll on the animal to change homes. That said, we love chickens and will continue to try to build our flock!

Thanks, everyone, for the replies!
