My chickens spend all night running around catching moths etc, they never roost is this because I do not have a cockerel

Are they being locked up in a coop? They should be contained at night to keep them safe from predators. If you provided them a roost bar in the coop and being locked up at night, they will naturally roost and sleep there.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! And do you have lights that are on all night, chickens should have a dark period.
 
They live in a 20metre square grass enclosure with 4 chicken houses to choose from all with roosting bars. They are safe from foxes etc and do not have lights on. Very odd !
