Noisy at bedtime?

When it's time for bed, a group of young chickens makes a what I describe as a gathering call. A repeated series of soft but rapid "peeeeep peep peep peep peep" seems to mean "let's gather together and go to sleep". It takes a few minutes for them all to get situated and as long as they are not disturbed they will quiet down and eventually go to sleep. I think this might be what you are seeing your youngsters do. The one that takes longer to settle may just be more active than her broodmates.

If you haven't introduced a roost for them to use, now would be the time to do it. I'm a big proponent of offering a perch for chicks on day one. I believe it's important for them to roost off the floor.

I hope this helps!

Agree. Mine were roosting by day 3. That’s one of the problems with using a brooder plate. They can’t roost. Nothing is perfect.

I never made the switch to a brooder plate. Call me "old school" I guess. I still prefer a light bulb. And you are correct, nothing is perfect. You can only do the best you can with what you've got on hand.

I don’t have a brooder plate but I bought this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B...&pf_rd_p=edaba0ee-c2fe-4124-9f5d-b31d6b1bfbee

but I did that because I had 3 week old chicks moving in an outside brooder and brand new chicks inside and didn’t want another heat lamp
It was really cold here for almost May so I had to give them some heat.

I have no real preference one to the other.
