I have two very noisy boys. I won't keep them in the outdoor aviary. I won't bother my neighbours, so I will replace the boys when I can. Does putting them in a lawn tractor quieten them at all? Maybe the can't crow with their beaks full?

You may want to send a private message to LJpnw. He only keeps his quail in tractors, and if anyone would know the answer, it would definitely be him. I hope he is able to assist you.
Good luck,
James

Yeah the grass does not seem to shut them up haha. I will say that coturnix roos will make different sounds. Some are louder than others and some have a more beautiful call in my view. If you can find someone around you who has a decent size flock of one hundred or more you can see if they will find you a more chill roo. Or they may let you come watch them and pick out your bird.

None of the quail tractors we have built have had to be removed because of complaints at this point. I think its because the neighbors think they are calls from wild birds.

Hi there, in my experience boys crow because they want more girls or sometimes because they are showing off to other boys. I had an injured boy that I brought inside to heal who drove me nuts with his crowing as it was waking me up - popped three hens in with him to keep him company and he barely crows at all now.

They also seem to crow more when they are younger .I've got a pen of young boys who were madly keen to show off to each other and the girls they can see from their pen, but the older they have gotten, the less they have been crowing.

Oh, edited to add that they are all usually on grass. The injured boy is inside on woodchips and couldn't see any other quail from where he was. I think it was mostly because he had his girls taken rather than being off the grass. Some boys are also naturally quieter than others.
