Oh. my. gawd. The darn roo quail started up at 5:20 am and have kept it up for 2 hours!!!! They're quailMcnuggets!!

They're not even 7 weeks, but too bad. Maybe the hens can wait until 12 weeks to process, but the roos are dinner as soon as they start the AM crowing next time!

AND my Maran rooster has started crowing, going after the banty roo, and running at ME, the little bugger.

If my gf is around, today is the day Simplyscrambled does the deed...

I personally don't think it's anymore loud than a wild song bird singing. Some coturnix can be REALLY high pitched though. In my experience the smaller the bird the louder the crow (i mean adult weight smaller). The bigger the coturnix the crow seems to be deeper. Atleast in my birds my jumbo roos mumble...not scream like some of my smaller ones do.

BTW, you're lucky... i have had some roos crow ALL NIGHT long... still do actually

Our windows are decintly sound proof though so i only hear them if im in the bathroom at night or outside.

The hens can wait to be butchered for sure, they dont crow so you wont have to deal with the noises

Whack off the crowers and you'll be peaceful with your gals until you're ready for them.

Oh Monarc, don't tell me all night long!!! Ack!!

Jason, I live in the suburbs, and the houses are pretty close together. I can easily hear them inside with windows closed, and it wakes me up, it wakes my kids up, and I'm afraid that I'll hear from my neighbors anytime now!

These are my first quail, and out of 20 babies, only 6 were hens. The girls are nice and quiet. And the male with the girls is pretty quiet as well, it's the aviary with all the boys together that makes the racket!

Buttons have a sweet little crow! My gf had them in her classroom.

Erk...watched a video on processing a chicken and felt ill.

I'm such a wimp.

Would it help you to think "dissection" instead of butchering?

I dunno we have crows that roost in the neighbor's eucylptus trees and caw at the first hint of sun, and 3 roosters on the block, so ours are below radar. (lady next door has at least 6 feeders out, so mornings are chipy parties.

Hmmm, when we did a rooster a week or 2 ago, Mr Saddi started singing Sweeny Todd, and we ended up laughing much of it, but I think that only works if your sence of humor is suitably warped.

Female coturnix do not crow sorry. Button quail females have a variety of calls. Only the button quail roo does the darth vadar breath noise (the crow). hwen i had button quails i thought my female was a male because "he was crowing" no SHE was calling for others. Coturnix do not have the variety of calls that buttons have. They have a few but the hens calls are NO where the same as roo crows.
