Hi all! me again. Long time no see.
So I have a female (jumbo?) pekin named Mymble. She's a lovely duck, she lays eggs for us almost every day and she's the sweetest bird you'll ever meet. But she's also very heavy, and this leaves her susceptible to ailments of the feet and legs, like bumblefoot, as we've learned. I've treated bumblefoot before in one of our drakes, but we don't have a sterile enough environment to do any surgery in, so I have to just soak in epsom salt, pull the infected scabbing off (sorry ducks..), slather it in triple antibiotic ointment, bandage it up and watch closely. It works in stopping the condition from worsening, and at least with Mymble, it did make her get better! She went from being totally unable to walk when I found her in the yard, using her wings and beak to drag along the ground, to being able to walk about and free range with the rest of her flock with no limping at all within a week and a half. The swelling has gone down tremendously, but there's still one toe that refuses to go down all the way. Not even the whole foot, or the ankle. Just the toe. It doesn't seem to be negatively impacting her in any way, and the inflammation is not spreading to the rest of the foot or leg (I've checked). So I've left it alone. I'm just curious to know if that's an acceptable course of action? No negative side-effects of this method so far, but figured I'd consult the real experts here.
