Hi,

My 5 year old black australorp hasn't laid an egg in over two years. Tonight she laid this...a weird shaped egg thing plus some egg yolk. What could this be? I was thinking lash egg but not sure.

Thank you!

Do you still have the object on the left? If yes, can you cut it open and take a photo of the interior? Doesn't appear to be a lash egg at a glance but we'd need to see the interior to know.

If it's not a lash egg then it's a partial membrane that should've become a shell, and the yolk and white that should've been inside.

I did cut it open and there was egg white in it.

Good to know! Since she hasn't laid in so long I'm not surprised to see a glitch. Hard to say if she'll continue laying after such a long break, or if this was a one off, but only time will tell.
Thank you! We just switched to a new feed (Grubbly) about a week or so ago and wondering if that had anything to do with it. Probably too soon for it to have an effect. But I did read some reviews that it helped their non-laying chickens start laying again. We shall see!

It looks like a weird soft shell egg or egg with a tail. See the link below for an example. Sometimes it is a one time thing, but it may show that she is experiencing reproductive problems. I would suggest giving her some calcium citrate with vitamin d for a few days. Aim for 300 mg or more, and don’t give it more than 7 days.

Funny to see this, we have two hens Hilda and Iris who didn’t lay at all last year (yep a whole year !) in the last 10 days we have had an egg a day from Hilda and today we got an egg from Iris.
Ok the eggs are only fit for cooking (sorry girls) but even so. They are 6 this Easter !

Thank you, we will try giving her calcium for the next several days to see what happens. She hasn't laid an egg in over two years so not sure if this is just a one time thing or not.
