Non-lethal dog persuasion

Paint ball gun with CO2 in it not only will it not hurt the dog but it will alert the owner that his/her dog has been out of the yard I live in the country and my dogs one indoor and one out never leave the yard because when I am in for the night the outside one get's hooked up to a very long chain this way I a sure he don't leave but I have had a run in with a few dogs and they have never came back hot pink paint on a dog kinda jumps out at you and it stings them so bad they have no idea where it came from they just know that what ever it was it came from my yard so after a few nights they learned not to come back.....

Paintball is looking like the best way so far. If you can use a paintball against a person it would be hard to consider it animal cruelty.

Fencing--I've already mentioned why not.

Pepper spray--not sure how easy it is to get here and it also has a limited range.

Trapping--I don't think it will work with a large dog. What do I do after I trap it? We don't have a pound or a requirement to license dogs. It would only work if I know who the owner is.

We have no pound or animal enforcement officer. About the only reason law enforcement would involved would be if a human were attacked. Around here the dog would be killed before law enforcement knew about it.

Catch the dog and rub poop on it. Come on over, I'll let you try catching dogs and gathering poop.

well I would just try and get in contact with your local dog warden, because at least in my state in my particular township paintballs are considered animal cruelty along with bbs. makes not a drop of sense to me, but egh. I just dont want you trying to protect and defend your property and come up in trouble. I 100% understand the fencing issue. dh and I live very much on a similar bit of land. its just not possible to fence it all. we are going to be putting a high fence with electric on the outside just for the yard. I would be ticked if somethign gets to my livestock, but my kids are a totaly different matter. good luck with your dog issues.

Think I'd get in trouble for this?

Sounds like you have way to much property put the electric fence up.
If the dog has tags on you could always take it to the groom shop,
have it shaved down and dyed pink. Then get it nuetered so it is less likely to stray................
Then hand the bill to the owner when you deliver their lovely pet back to them.

I know it would sure make me keep my dog in my yard. And so would the paint
balls. That is a clear sign to them their dog is in the wrong place and that you're trying
not to harm the animal.
Good luck to you.

the lady with 4 dogs and 4 city chickens, a rabbit with more on the way and a lizard.

Paintball gun or Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. The Red Ryder shoots at such a slow speed that it won't pentrate unless you literally hold it up to the dog's butt. Even then, that would be a stretch to do any damage.

I'd escalate. Spray, paintball, BB-Gun, and finally lethal defense using a pistol or rifle of suitable caliber to take the animal down cleanly and humanely. A .223 on up should suffice.
