Non-Soy Feed?

Quote:
I (and more importantly my girls) love love love the Cascade corn/soy-free mash. I ran out and got some soy-free pellets to tide us over, and they're picking around the pellets to get to the last crumbs of mash. You try to tell me there's no difference, but I will beg to differ - the girls know what's good stuff!

I submit that the reason they hens are picking around the pellets has more to do with the form of the feed rather than the ingredient matrix in the feeds.

For those of you that do feed the organic soy free, is the feed mostly powder? I got a bag, which was full of bugs, but its mostly brown powder with a little grain mixed in, and some popped corn.
I was trying to get away from the powdery crumbles, and this is worse.

I use organic, soy-free from Countryside Organics, and there is very little powder of any kind. The little bit of powder that is in there is the Icelandic kelp and the Fertrell Poultry Nutri-balancer, vitamins and natural sea salt. The chick starter is ground up finer, but the grower/broiler and layer has nice big pieces of field peas, non-GMO corn and barely ground grains of wheat, oats, etc.

I don't have any experience with any other brand. I live close to Countryside and have been a customer since they first opened the doors. Others on here can help you with other brands.

Well, we went to two feed store/tractor supply type places yesterday and neither carry soy free. I talked to them about ordering and if it doesn't come from Purina, it will cost me more to have them get it than ordering it myself. I'll keep looking though. There is a mom and pop type store that wasn't open yesterday so I'll check with them this week.

I checked ebay but they're charging about the same but for half the amount of food. Not good...

Thanks for everyone's suggestions! I still have time. My eggs are still in the incubator.

I did pick up a bag of medicated chick feed. Couldn't find organic. Not off to a good start so far.

We use Scratch and Peck too and they ship flat rate now. They are in WA state. I only have 6 chickens so a 25 pound bag lasts me a month because I supplement with other fresh foods. http://www.scratchandpeck.com/ Really great stuff and they love it.
I bought from H&H in TX and it was buggy. The owner of the company told me it was "normal", I won't buy from them again but it was interesting looking with puffed rice or something in it. Had a sweet smell too.
I am also soy-sensitive so didn't want to eat the eggs from soy feed. I had NO idea it would be so difficult to find. I would love to learn how to make my own.
