⠀ nonlayers eating layer feed?

I have five hens. Two are laying, and the other three are close to laying. Is it ok for the nonlayers to eat the layer feed? Also, I have black oil sunflower seeds, how much should I give them?

If the non-layers are at least 16 weeks of age and close to laying, it is fine for them to be eating the layer feed. That will ensure that they have adequate calcium in their system when laying commences. I always advise that the layer feed make up 90% of the total diet, to ensure the birds get adequate nutrition to maintain optimal performance. I would say one cup of BOS strewn around for five hens to scratch at would be plenty.
