noob from the MS coast

If it is cocci, there is no need to quarantine. Cocci is an internal parasite that all birds have. Babies just get overwhelmed with these parasites and don't yet have the ability to control them. As they age, babies are able to control them enough as to not kill the bird. :-)

I want to keep her out of the big girl cage until she gets some age and size. There is a 3 week difference in her and the others. My understanding is that cocci is contagious.

Cocci is not contagious, other than the other chicks can come into contact with this birds poop. All chicks and birds have cocci in their intestines. Chicks grow immunity as they age thru exposure to it. Adult birds can also contract cocci and become ill of over exposed to too many cocci cysts.

Ok, not contagious, but if her poop has it in it and the other chicks ingest it then they can get it.....correct?

They can get MORE cocci by coming into contact with this babies poop, but they already have loads of it to begin with. All of them have cocci at hatch. But this particular chick may have come into more contact than the others, or is just weaker in becoming immune. Cocci is in the dirt, in all birds intestines, it blows on the wind. Chickens are always coming into contact with it. Even your dog can have cocci and comes into contact with it. But as animals and birds age, they grow immunity to it and can learn to control it with in their bodies. It takes about 6 to 8 weeks of age of small exposure to cocci to develop immunity. Generally chicks can develop illness between 2 to 4 weeks of age. And hopefully when they are ready to head out to the coop, they have developed enough immunity that they can handle digging around in the dirt, and coming into more contact with each others poop that nobody gets sick. But even an adult flock can come down with cocci, especially when new birds are brought on to new ground. Birds become immune to their surroundings. I hope this helps explain it better. :-)

Being a chicken mom is hard =/
LOL...It IS hard at first. But eventually you learn all these things and raising them gets really easy. And once they become adults and start laying those eggs, all these things that were troublesome when they were babies, all fades away. :-)

Just do the best you can with your babies, give them lots of love, and they will do just fine. So will you.

Thanks, it gets a little overwhelming at times but all I can do is my best I suppose. Thanks for the encouragement!
