Hello all

Have wanted to have a flock for decades but never had the chance and not getting any younger - so here I am.

Completely new to chickens and presently have two groups - 15 birds now coming up on 9 weeks old and 31 young chicks not yet a week old.
Read as much as I could about choosing and raising them, in books and on-line - and now turn to the experts-in-the-field for on-going insights, suggestions and observations.

The flock presently consists of 6 Buff Orpingtons, 6 Rhode Island Reds, 6 Chanteclers, 7 Delawares, 8 Black Jersey Giants and 10 White Jersey Giants, along with 3 Bantams. So far, so good. All friendly and entertaining, voracious eaters and drinkers, and very personable.

Late spring cold and now oppressive summer heat and humidity, and H5N1 threat have FUBARed original plans, so now we improvise.

Working on the coop - the big house - for when we ultimately put them outdoors.

Anyone have any thoughts on coop style or size? Should I have one large one or more than one? I'm thinking one big enough for the whole flock, and some extra space?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :welcome

Chickens should have a least 4sq ft per chicken in coop, 10 sq ft in run, 1 ft of linear roost, and 1 sq ft of 24/7 ventilation.

I would make one big coop and run and split it in half with hardware cloth. I would do that because you probably have a couple cockerels in your batch of chicks and they may fight when older so you can have two flocks. Unless you will cull extra cockerels.
