I’m sure this has been answered countess times, but omits spent 45 minutes looking for the answer and didn’t fine it.
How do you know when to take eggs from the coop inside to incubate?
Does the 21 days start ticking once the egg is laid or once it is in the incubator.
We have a rooster for the first time (since last summer)
One of the hens is gathering eggs (there’s about 9) but she rarely sits on them.
What I Don’t find to be clear in the 101 hatching egg material is a explanation of what is happening ... are those eggs on pause until they heat up???
How can they all hatch at the same time if they were laid over the course of different days
This is all confusing!!!

(1) If you are incubating the eggs you should try to collect them all within 7 days of being laid for the best results.
(2) The "clock" starts ticking the day you start incubating the eggs or your hen is dedicated to setting on them for that matter.
(3) if your Hen is gathering eggs it's best to mark them so you know when (date) they were laid. I have had other hens boot the broody hen out to lay another egg in their favorite nest and (if the eggs weren't marked you might just be adding fresh eggs all the time and that would be problematic)
(4) if you have a favorite breed you can add those eggs to the broody hen and she won't mind as long as she can cover them. Attached is one of my French Black Copper Marans that just went broody- tis the season as one of my ameracauna's and one of my Welsummer's went broody-as well. (Good luck 👍)

Thank you , this is super helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to reply with such detail.
Cute kiddo too!

I have a question too ! And I can not find answers on it……. I just placed eggs into the incubator they were shipped and because it’s so hot in vegas right now when I candled some had already started developing! I have them pointy side down in the incubator as of right now hoping the others catch up and air cells stabilize since it’s only been 24hrs since I received them from the post. I am wondering if I can place an egg that is a first egg from a silky we have she just laid it today ! She has been being mated regularly and just today started laying. Is it ok to hatch a first egg?????
