Noobie needs help: Onions---when and how to plant.

You've inspired me! This time of the year, I'm suffering garden and fresh veggie withdrawal! I love scallions. How much of the root base of a sweet onion would be required to get decent top growth? I'm guessing that sweet onions would produce a sweeter top? IMO, better to have green stuff growing on the window sill that you can eat, or otherwise use, instead of just for looks. I have half a dozen citronella in various stages of growth. It'd be nice to have some onion tops, dill, parsley and basil to round out the sill garden.

I've started them with using just maybe a half inch of onion left and others with a little less than half the onion. My sweet onion is the first one I started and though it sprouted quickly, the others that I planted well after have caught up to it quickly. That's also the one that only had about 1/2". So, it takes less time if you leave a little more to the rooted end which works well for me with the lack of onion lovers here.

I love having the scallions in particular because more often then not, they're something I always forget to add to my grocery list. I literally just take a pair of kitchen sheers and snip the greens as I need them. It's so convenient! and having an indoor container garden helps settle that agitation of wanting to get digging that starts for me around the end of January.

Given the love of onions here, you ladies may also be interested in making your own Fire Cider which uses a lot of onions and garlic along with some other goodies. I crave this stuff during the winter months after having pneumonia two winters ago and haven't had so much as a cold since.

This is my first year trying onions. I try to grow something new every year. I will grow them again next year.

Lazy gardener--We use a fair number of onions as . .well my mother did!!! lol Onions went into most everything. THese days I prefer scallions as I"m ususally trying to keep my carbs numberd low. ANd scallions are the perfect sub for the onion bulb in my salads, eggs, etc. SO I tent to buy a lot of scallions, though I"m thinking that imature onions can be used as well before the bulbs start to swell.

IslandGIRL-- yup, you are on the right track. Onions are VERY healthy, including anything in the onion and garlic family. Had my kids help peel the cloves of 2 garlics and after that they were begging me to finish peeling the remaining 6 bulbs. THey thought it was FUN !!! I figured a little work peeling those bulbs was worth the effort as I noticed the peeled garlic at the store is from CHIna. WTH???? I keep garlic cloves in the freezer in a jar for easy use.

Keesmom--- we know what you will be doing for the next few days!!! lol How are you enjoying this artick blast???? I"m tossing a couple roasted chickens in a soup pot with garlic salt and onions.
