Hi Everyone!
I was raised in a farm in Michigan where we had many different animals, including chickens. I have many wonderful childhood memories surrounding our egg layers (not the meat chickens-that was traumatizing to me) and have always wanted my own flock. 9 years ago we moved to a rural area and I have been voicing my wish since then. This past Easter someone in my church had a horrible idea to bring in chicks and bunnies for a display. They started out with 10 chicks, many of whom had pasty butt (which I remembered from my days on the farm but didn't know it was just a matter of getting the poop off their butts). I thought someone would take them home after Easter but no one did. By the time I checked on them a week later, 8 had died so I confiscated the last two. I had every intention of fining them a home but after caring for them a few days I had fallen in love and they became the first of my flock of 12. The first two are buff Brahams and I added 6 red sex links, 1 silver lace Wyandotte, 1 barred rock, 1 black australorp, and 1red spotted Sussex. All are hens. I am strictly in the chicken business for enjoyment and eggs. No showing. I have to tell you, even though many of you will think I'm stupid, that I have spent over $300 dollars on one of my Brahams (Daisy) to try to correct a splayed leg due to a slipped tendon. There you go, that's how much I love my girls. Luckily I have a very supportive husband.
Every time I searched for an answer to a question about chickens, I always ended up on this site. You all have helped me so much. My girls wouldn't be as healthy and beautiful as they are without the knowledge you have provided. Thank you so much.
