We have 13 hens, mossers, azures, marans an isbar and a funky cross with speckled eggs. The rooster is a gorgeous coco egger and is an absolute enjoyable archetype of THE rooster.

Just wanted to join up to participate. I'm not new to chickens but the lapse in time effectively makes me new.

Most interesting thing so far with this flock, we've had them for about 10 months, is the interaction between our cats and the chickens. The chickens have about a quarter acre of fenced in land to roam and its a nice place to hang out, the chickens like to be around us and the cats like to participate.

Right now I have an interesting situation where the ravens are running a protection racket in my chicken area. Some are laying outside, some are laying in the roll away nest box.

But the ravens have spotted the outside eggs and will swipe them. So I have to vigilant but I cant spend my day as a scarecrow, so something has to happen.

Thing is, the ravens fight the hawks off. Just today they fought one off and came back and perched up in the trees over the chickens.

I think I just have to accept this situation. Stay vigilant, knowing they will get an egg now and then, and figure its better to lose an egg than a hen.

Gotta admit the rooster appears a bit emasculated.

Hi, thanks for joining! It might be worth paying the ravens an occasional egg to keep the hawks away.
Yup, thats basically what I have given into, lol, the raven shakedown, "would you rather lose a chicken or an egg?" Its these two ravens who are in on it, they must be keeping other ravens away, because I know they are around. I should limit the eggs to keep the bounty down so word doesn't get out.
