Normal Behavior for Molting?

The advice one often gets is feed the hen a higher protein feed. I think this is another one of those pieces of advice that is just a repeat of what people have read rather than understanding the problem.
Of course, if the hen isn't eating commercial feed during her moult, or eating very little, then a higher protein feed isn't going to be of much use.

I found they did eat but they foraged for particular things if they were able to find them. While their crops wouldn't be full at roost time, it was apparent by feeling their crops before roost time that they had eaten during the day.

I wonder if I could trouble you to vote in the poll linked to below. Perhaps one day we will understand what it is that moulting hens feel they need during a heavy moult that isn't in commercial feed.
