I have a pair of chicken (male + female), and usually when I go into the chicken coop to refill their food & water my rooster will seem to be a bit aggressive, but never attacking me. But then it happened, I got kicked one time while not looking, it was only a kick until I went down to hold him and he seemed to calm down. Is it normal for a rooster to be somewhat aggressive when there's a hen with him that in his mind he's trying to protect and claim as his? I say that because a lot of times when I go in their to give them food or water, the rooster will chase the hen and mate her in my presence.

Ok he should not be mating her in your presence, he’s showing you his dominance. I push mine off the hen when I’m there, he doesn’t do it anymore. I have 13 hens for one rooster.

Also it’s not great to have only one hen for him, he will need at least 3-4. He’s chasing you away from his girl , but you shouldn’t let him hurt you .

I pick mine up too and walk around hold him outside of the coop , I tell him he’s being a bad boy and that I have a great soup crock pot recipe

Ages of the chickens are helpful. I also do not care if my roosters mate or crow in my presence. They are taught from the get-go that I am the boss. I am the human, and they will respect me. Any cockerel/rooster that feels the need to "protect" his hen(s) from the human that brings them good things is not doing his job. His job is to watch and alert for real threats. A good one will know the difference.

Rooster always show lot of dominance sometimes they become very aggressive if any rooster start showing much aggression must be separated for few hours

He is still fairly young, I want to say around 7-8 months of age. Anyway, he really isn't human aggressive at all...... not to the point that when he sees you he's ready for an all out war. I chalk it up to normal teenage behavior, I think, where they are trying to prove themselves in a way. I mean, when I go down to pick him up he'll flare just for a second and peck me a little until I pick him up and it's like a switch turning 'fight mode' off.

Nothing like a teenage rooster , oh right there is a teenage boy!! Or girl !!

Give him time , don’t let him scare you this is the time to show him you are the boss,
Good luck
