Had a bit of a scare with a pair of my Dutch pets. JW and Dovey both went down hill fast this past weekend. They both didn't want to move and were all humped up sleeping all day. I checked Dovey and found nothing. JW, however, told the story of what was really wrong. Starting at the fluff under his vent running all the way under to his chest were scabs. He was severely infested with mites. Infested to the point that they were eating him alive. The mites were living on him. At night the bugs were visiting Dovey, who always sleeps snuggled against him. 5 birds sleep in that small house and all were dusted thoroughly. They will get that again this coming weekend.

Dovey recovered fairly quickly, but JW went on down. To the point I thought he was done for. Sunday I gave him an Amoxicillin capsule. By that evening he seemed a bit better. Yesterday he was still really slow, but he was awake and watching. Today he is CROWING again. He is about 80% back. He is going around with the girls, but seems a bit tired. The anemia/blood lose from the bus pulled his immune system down so far that he picked up some sort of infection. The Amoxicillin seems to have taken are of it. He will get a follow up capsule this evening.

With the houses closed tighter for winter this has made it a little more humid in the houses. That makes the perfect place for mites. Just because it is cooling off doesn't mean we can forget about the parasites. I am checking everyone here over the next week. Found some on Mocha today. She is another Dutch, just older. Normally I could check everyone in a day, but my lungs are still filled with fluid and I can't go for long before flat out exhausted.

I can relate to that story Matt, almost lost one of my best rooster last winter to those darn mites!!

Mites were a topic of discussion at Crossroads and prevention/treating. Did discover that for some reason mites are strongly drawn to buff colored birds.

I find this to be very true for me as well, the majority of my flock stays mite free as we do treat regular and often but regardless of what we use or how often on my buffs I always seem to have a problem. They aren't sure exactly what it is about the buffs that the mites like so much but they do.

I hope he recovers Matt sounds like he is making progress, We had a mite infestation only once and that was enough, I use Epernix pour on and also Poultry protector in the coops. Haven't had any problems since. Sounds like you've been sick too, hope your feeling better.

Just wanted to say Brian has another interview with another company tomorrow. Off to Cary he goes! Wish us luck!

(The other company hasn't responded yet, but they said it wouldn't be until the end of the week anyways.)
