Oh man! I may or may not have a white roo... I'm still waiting to find out. I'll keep you in mind just in case he turns out to be a she. I'd love to have both girls of course, but I do need a roo, but can only have 1.

I have some Silkies that I am growing out. I am SURE I can scrounge up an extra rooster if yours turns out to be a hen.

Good Thursday Morning everyone!!

Hope everyone is doing well. It is suppose to be another day with temps in the 60's. I must ask...is this NORMAL?? I am so use to snow in October-April, that I don't know if this is typical NC weather or just something "special" this year.

I don't know about you all, but this back and forth from warm to cold is doing a number on my sinuses and I officially have my first (in a VERY long time) head cold.

I guess it could be worse, so I won't complain!

My chickens are loving the weather though. Yesterday they were all scattered about sunbathing!! Too cute!! My 2 new girls (still nameless) are still a bit timid and are not 100% in love with me...YET. A few more days of treats and extra loving and we'll see.

I have enjoyed the past few days of watching the boys dance for the new girls...one is ready for boys, the other runs away and hides under her nest-mate.

Guess she still has a little bit to learn!!

Today is my final day of baking goodies for the neighbors & friends...then I will move on to baking for our family, DH wants some chocolate chip breakfast bread (remember him telling me it was MY fault he was getting a little rounder in the middle?!? mmmhmmm). I am hoping to get started and finished

on a velvet Christmas dress for my DD and her friend. I have never worked with velvet in this scale before (and when I have worked with velvet, it was a pain in my you know what!!) so we will see how it goes. Fortunately I am hoping to make it a tad big so they can wear it this year and possibly next year...again, we will see. I may just set fire to the velvet and call it a day after working with it for an hour or two!!

I hope everyone has a great day!!

RF - I will keep you posted if they do respond to my photo...somehow though, I doubt they will respond. After all, according to their chemist, it was a completely "natural" occurrence in the egg!! If that's the case, then apparently all of our eggs are not "normal" I guess!!

Crazy!!

What the chemist I think was saying and referring to was that when that membrane starts to break down, bits get into the white, and it does happens...you have to remember store bought eggs are often already a month or more old by the time they get on the shelf to be bought. So its just a sign the eggs were older. I would have done a float test on the other eggs and/or candled them to see how big or small the air cells were.

but thats just me.

Also it is true you can find bits of 'extra' stuff in back yard eggs, but its not often because usually our hens are very healthy, much more so than factory chickens. The look of the thing you showed and with it being very tough, I wonder if it wasn't actually a worm or an extra bit of the shell before it hardened...It reminds me of the funky eggs I see pictures of that have the 'sack' on the outside of the shells, and people say they're really tough like rubber.

However I don't blame you at all for tossing out the eggs.

Quick Susan update: While her tail is still down, she seems to have perked back up a bit today. Her comb is still a lighter pink color, but it is definitely darker than it was yesterday...so maybe yesterday was the bottom of the barrel for her and now she is working her way back up?!?
hu.gif
She was out running after "the Man" and the rest of the group, whereas, a few days ago, she was just wandering around by herself. I think that's a good sign?!? Thank you all for your thoughts, suggestions and concerns regarding Susan!!
hugs.gif
You made this scary ordeal a lot less worrisome for me and I cannot thank you enough for it!

A HUGE thank you to Beth who not only came out to help me worm and trim feathers but also provided a much needed time of adult conversation.

You are such a sweetheart!! We will definitely have to do it more often...just not the worming/trimming feathers part!!
gig.gif
I can always have cookies and tea at the ready!!

Lastly...after much consulting (haha) with DD and the previous family we have decided the names for the two new girls are: BALL and OWL okay, just kidding. Since DD was set on ball and owl, the kids came up with Belle and Olivia...now to decide who is who.
