I took in 4 new chickens today. Looks like 1 definate rooster, 2 probable girls, and one that is a toss up. They are mutts, but I don't care. These are rescues. What ticks me off is that these 7-8 month old birds look like they are 3 months old. It is pathetic. They have had nothing but corn in their lives and very little of that. They have never been on the ground. A 3x5 rabbit cage with 8 other birds is all they have known. They had no food or water when I was there and saw nothing to put either in. The smell from that cage was awful.

I am really getting sick of people not taking proper care of their animals. These came from a friend of Mom's. We have tried to 'teach' her how to take care of them, but she will not change. No, we do not go off on her even though that is EXACTLY what I want to do. We talk nice and friendly and make suggestions. Have been for 5 years. I seem to get a set from her each year to rehab because they aren't growing right and the 8 month old hens aren't laying yet. I think this is the worst bunch yet. If what is supposed to be a standard sized bird has only grown to 2 pounds in 7 months then it is NOT being raised right and will NEVER lay. Sorry, but it just really ticks me off.

Except for the stunted growth and being really thin they appear healthy. I went over each of them very carefully. Even so, luckily, my 6'x10' PVC pen is empty and available for quarenteen. I dusted them and put them in. They didn't know what to do first; food, water, dig in the dirt, or try that green stuff growing out of the dirt.

Since there is just 2 of them I would have them in the house with me. Might be a little hard for just 2 to keep each other warm enough.

Also would be a time to tame them up and make wonderful little pets of them.

Finally got home from the store the post office so I thought I could relax for a couple hours before dinner. Ran a load of dishes and laundry... then got an order for 13 dz cookies!

Back to the kitchen....

I miss you guys!

I agree, I'd bring them in at let them get used to being handled!

Ok serious question, my hens are now 18 weeks old! BUT they are still only about 3 pounds, they are supposed to be standard size, Will they get bigger or did I end up with bantams?
