A good morning everyone!!

So, miss a couple of days and how namy pages of chat I have to catch up on????? about 12. I have noticed in this new format there are not as many posts on each page......

So, my layers have started again, with 7 hens and 2 roo's I am getting 4 or 5 eggs aday again this week. Good news, hopefully upping them on to a 20% protein layer pellets, adding mung beans to their diet and all of the "extras" we give them is helping..... I need the eggs bad, doing Atkins diet means I can eat more eggs - lost 14lbs since Jan 1, so keep laying girls.... The silkies are sporadic still in their laying, but hopefully I can break my 3 broodies and get them to lay again....

I don't think our incubator got much of a rest from last year, since beginning of Dec, I have hatched over 50 chicks, managed to sell all of the Cuckoo Marans, and hatched out some silkies of my own layers (7) and also gor 2 eggs from a batch I bought on ebay. Currently I have 13 eggs from IN, in the incubator, along with another 24 from Bat Cave (thanks Sandy), all going into lockdown 1/29. If all hatch out then I will have 37 Partridge Silkie chicks. I started using the dry incubation method, only upping the humidity from lockdown, this seems to be working very well so far with a hatch rate of over 90%. So, if all these little babies hatch, then I will have some Partridge Silkies available sometime in the spring....

And to answer an important question ; yes it is raining here too..... again...

Right now for eggs we are getting probably 20+ a day, some are eatin and others hatchin eggs. I have been cooking eggs up at least twice a week and adding flax, shell & cayenne. My girls all seem to be laying very solid eggs. I am also giving them straight alfalfa a few times a week, for warmth and condition.

Let me know when you have some free time, we'd love to have you out, who knows what else you would add to your flock.

When I went out this morning they were standing in 1-2 inches of water. Moved the pea chicks in with the older peas...so far so good. Moved the wheaten AMs in the pea chick coop. Left the barred OE out, they are muddy but not drowning...piled hay in their coop. Going to scramble up lots of eggs and put some nutri drench in the water.

Kids have a 4 day weekend.. weather forecast = rain

Good morning everyone. After going over the list of chicken breeds about 40 times and slowly narrowing the list down to the type of chickens I want to breed I have finally gotten it down to brahmas and cochins. I already have a few of those breeds in my mixed flock but I am going to get some more from ideal and work on those two breeds. I especially like the brahmas because they have everything I want and were at the top of my list after narrowing it down.

Traits they have that I was looking for: Friendly, calm, broody, good moms, extra large eggs, large meat birds and known for great taste, and good in my climate. Can't wait to place my order! Right now I only have 3 brahma hens so looking forward to increasing my numbers and adding a rooster so I can start breeding.
