I am still looking for some chickens if anyone near me can help please let me know. I am in need of a LF rooster to lead my flock of hens. My flock is mixed but mainly filled with dual purpose birds and I would like to have a dual purpose rooster for them as well. I am interested in cochins, brahmas, barred rocks, opingtons or any other LF dual purpose birds. If anyone has an extra rooster who needs a flock of ladies to keep him company please let me know. Right now I have two bantam roosters and bantams just don't fit into my goals for the future of my flock so if you can it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

I will say my Cochins (I am blaming these 2 girls...but they are my favorite, so it's okay, they'll be forgiven) are the worse as they rarely (they are getting better lately) leave the coop!! We don't drink coffee, but I needed to buy some for my mother & mother-in-law's visits in April. I will just buy a small can of coffee and then pour the coffee into a bag and shove it into the freezer!! VIOLA!! Instant ready coffee can!! I wish I had thought to ask you all earlier....before I started going through so many bags!!

Well, you learn and then you don't forget!

Do you think I should taper their food gradually back like you do with "fat" dogs/cats/horses, etc... or is it okay just to make the switch, since they do free range? I don't want to shock their system and have them "starving" or get sick.

Please keep my wee one in your thoughts and prayers. It's been a rough week for us as she has been sick, and I am not sure what exactly is wrong with her. She has a cold, but this past week she has been waking up in the middle of the night every few hours and just crying. I originally thought nightmares/night-terrors as she isn't fully awake when she cries, but it has been every night this week almost all night long. Regardless of what it is, neither of us are getting much sleep and while it will be good practice for me with the new one (6.5 weeks and COUNTING...c'mon march/april get here already) I would like her to feel better.

On a happier note: Getting excited as our garden is starting to take shape and we are heading out this weekend to buy the framing for the fence around it and the little indoor starter pots as I am planning to begin a TON indoors (following the recommendations exactly...hopefully)!! Keeping my fingers crossed that we actually manage to grow something!! Now if we could only master the weed control without having to weed daily - or as often!!

Have a great day everyone!!

Wild - March 20th works for me!! The sooner the better (so long as I am past 35 weeks of course!!) as I am getting tired of missing my feet!! Hehe. I will admit to being jealous of DH because he can sleep through ANYTHING!! He has slept through her crying in our room when she was an infant and screaming down the hall when she was "sleeping". So yeah...I am jealous!! I have been tempted to "nudge" him a few times to wake him up but I can't bring myself to do it since he works 10-12 hours a day and I can nap when (if) she naps!! I hope she isn't having night-terrors but some answer would be better than none. Glad to know that whatever it is, it won't be permanent. If only I can get her cough/mucus congestion taken care of. The worse part of it all, I went to the store to try and find some cough medicine...they don't have any for "infants" or any child under 4. The pharmacist told me they want you to take her to the doctors. I was irritated. The doctors' are for emergencies and routine visits...this is neither, so I am irritated to say the least!!

MLR - I'll take a few of those house cleaning chickens as well!! Especially if they change diapers!!

If her coughing and congestion have lasted a week you really should take her to the doctor. the waking up crying out could be connected. My first thought is inner ear infection. If her coughs sound wet at all, it could be shes getting or has bronchitis which needs an antibiotic. I would rather take the safer road in this case and take her to the doctor - the ear and throat are often connected and an infection one place can cause problems else where. A doctor visit can tell you quickly if its just a cold or if its bronchitis and if she has an ear infection...my daughter and even myself when I was kid would wake up randomly at night and cry from the pain of an ear infection. The problem with little ones is they can't tell you what hurts and what the problem is. My daughter develops bronchitis easy, and it can be hard to tell the difference without knowing the sounds of the cough and listening to the chest. is she wheezy at all when and after she coughs? do you have a stethescope to listen to her with? I would atleast try to put my ear to her back and listen to her as she breaths when shes not crying, if it sounds at all labored or wheezy when shes taking resting normal breaths - take her to the doctor. also put your thumbs on her forehead/temple area or resting to the sides of her eyes and use your pointer and middle finger to gentle feel around her ears, behind the shell in that soft area and slowly gently prob towards and around the throat. if she fusses or cries out - your dealing with an ear infection.
