no chickens coop is almost complete! I think I am overdoing it but i want them to have lets say a nice home...

You bring them to the flock swap!

No, really I would put them up on craigslist for a few dollars or whatever you think you can sell them for and live with. If you have any left, though, go ahead and bring them to the flock swap. Worse case scenario, you have to take them back home. Best case, the roos find a new home and you maybe take home some hens or pullets! As for how a flock swap works, I can only tell you my understanding cause even though I'm organizing it, this will be my first!

So, how it works is everyone brings any chicks, chickens, ducks (someone I talked to today about the swap wants ducks) or fowl that they are willing to part with. If you apply for your NC poultry license (which is free) you can sell your birds. Anyone can buy, and we're advertizing and putting up flyers so hopefully lots of interested people will show. We talk, we sell and swap, and we eat my kids baked goods with our pocket change!

Then we tell the good people of Southern States a big thank you, possibly by way of buying whatever it is we've been needing for the coop, and we go home having gotten our chicken fix.

I think that's how it works. Experienced peeps jump in here!

I seem to have a major problem on my hands. I posted some pics of my silkies in another thread - now completely convinced that I managed to get 6 cockrels. There is NO way I can keep all six with no hens. What do you do with little boy chickens that are going to grow into useless, noisy roosters? They're very sweet and really cute but at least 5 have to go. Anyone who is possibly interested, please email me and I'll send you pictures or you can come see them. chgothorp @ gmail.com

Thank you. I have been reading alot.... okay more on the obsessive side. Driving my DH crazy. He talked about getting chickens over a year ago for the eggs. Well I brought it up several weeks ago since we decide to purchase the land next to us and he said "alright'. So then we started looking at all the chickens and I was like holly molly there are all kinds of chickens. And then I feel in love with some of them... they are soooo beutiful. So we ordered 25 plus a free one from McMurray. I got myself 3 silkies and 1 sultan bantam, 2 cochins (I saw those at someone elses house and thought they were awesome). My son who is 5 wanted a White Crested Black Polish , but "not a boy one, because the girl ones are the ones that look like they have their brains on the outside"

. So I got him 2. Then my DH wanted some RIR, Black Stars, and we got a few EE, SLW, and LB.

Cant wait, but will have to till April 23. I did find a Flock Swap local. We are going to go but I was told I was not allowed to get anything, just learn.

Are they crowing? Silkies are not the easiest to sex. I would not be so quick to dump them. Just my opinion !

I had a silkie I was positive was going to be a roo, until it did the hen squat! Just wait it out and be sure, wouldn't want to sell them, then find out they were pullets!

They all have quite the combs growing and although I would hope some of their behavior is just juvenile - it's looking awful roosterish to me

They are WAY too young to even do any serious guessing on. I had a white I swore was a girl at 3 months...at 4-5 months I swore it was a boy...then it finally started the hen squats and then laying at 6 months...LOL

Easiest silkies to sex are the partridge, you have a partridge (brown/orange colored one) and that one I KNOW is a boy, the coloring tells me that. All other colors are unisexed (same color for boys/girls)

So far out of all the others pictured I say hold onto them til they are 4 or 5 months and try to put pictures up then and ask sex opinions.

OOO no...hold on !!! They are WAY to young to sex !!!! Wait at least until they are 6 months.
