North Carolina

I will love them too much in another 2 months :(

I understand that, but I am telling you theres a good chance they are girls. I NEVER sell silkies at this age if I want to keep them to sex them, because I could be giving away really nice pullets. I think the black one is girly - they are at that really awkward phase and theres just no telling if they are boys or girls - despite the raised combs. Many of my silkies get raised combs and then their crests come in and the comb looks small.

to all new flockers.

Bhep, thanks for the great visit once again, the kids enjoyed it alot. Got Hook setup for the night and the turkeys, well DH says "I know that they are yours but they can't be in the brooder in the hen house, they gotta be inside the house." So who's babies are they really ?!?!

It was nice to meet you and your DH Ally, will have to meet up sometime at the WCA or some place else.

CelesteG, I would hold on to them like eveyine says. Silkies are one of the hardest breeds to sex.

Celeste, I know just how you feel. I have 2 adorable 2 week old Silkies, one black and one blue. I love them already....my son named them Ms Feathers (for her future look) and Rapunzel because he loves the movie Tangled and she will have long feathers. Now, I am praying

they stay girls. lol. Otherwise it might be MR Feathers and Flynn Rider (if you've seen the show you'll know). But I already myself love them and they eat out of my hands and are so darn cute I just can't imagine getting rid of them if they are both boys. Even just one would be terrible. And even worse would be my son. He seems attached to all of them already. :(

Hey!! I am in Hampstead!!! We spent about 500 on our first coop, it has vinyl flooring, 2 roosting poles, 6 nesting boxed, 2 windows, a human door and a chicken door with ramp and is 8 x 8!! The next 5 were all made ftom recylced materials!! Bottom line................chickens don't care how much you spend on their houses!!

Hope to see you here and you will love reading all the posts! Everyone is so helpful here, we are new to raising chickens and having a blast!!

We also looked, debated, asked and then decided to go with shavings, top dressed with DE. The DE really helps with killing mites and flies, and also keeps the smell away and dries up the poop/pee quickly. We use a pitch fork and just lift up the poopy shavings when necessary. I also put the DE in their dust "bowls" and nesting boxes too!

LOL! I try. This forum has helped tremendously. Even though sometimes it confuses me too. lol. I am battling the whole sand vs shavings in my head for the coop right now for when it's done. I have read wonderful pros and cons on both sides and guess I need to just try sand to see if it works for me and if not, go back to shavings. I really love all the people sharing their experiences on here though.
