Anybody near Lake Norman (north of Charlotte) and willing to let me check out your coop? Me and my family are just getting started, have lots of questions, would like to see an "up and running" coop and learn from others.

I live just to the east of Statesville. If you want to come up on the weekend I'll be glad to show you my coop and run. Here's a couple of pics of it now:

I took this carport and made it into a chicken run and put my coop inside it. I put chicken wire mesh around it, built a gate, and layed in an inch or so of Crush & Run (sand and gravel), then layed another three inches of creek sand over that. It keeps everything nice and dry. With this cold weather we've been having I covered over the wire mesh with tarps to make a wind breaks and that helps a lot. We have 19 Gold Comet pullets (all under a year old) and they are some happy chickens! We're going to add another 17 GC's in the spring to make it an even 36. My co-workers buy all the eggs I bring in and we get 17 to 19 every day, even now with the cold weather.

This is a pic of the coop I built. In the spring I'm going to add a nest box on the back with a hinged top and I'll extend the roosting bars inside to both sides giving me plenty of room for up to forty hens. It's 4'x8'x4' and raised up off the ground by 2'.

Yeah, so if you're interested let me know and I'll send you directions.

Hey Jim - the coop looks great! How long have you been doing this? Yes - it might be worth a trip up to learn from you as we get started. How long is it to your coop from Ext 28, Cornelius? thanks-susan/drew

Thanks! We've been doing this less than a year. I started building the coop late last January when Teresa placed an order to Shooks Poultry. They're up in Claremont over towards Hickory. In mid-April we got our first six 18 week old started pullets which are Gold Comets or Red Stars or Red Sex Links depending on who you talk to. Then we added another six in late June, and another seven in mid-September for a total of nineteen. We plan on adding another 17 to 21 more GC's in the spring. I sell all the eggs we don't use to my co-workers and Teresa sells some to friends as well. We love it. It pays for the feed. It'll never pay for the Taj Mahal of coops though...

We're about a half hour from Cornelius. You'd go up I-77 north to Exit #49 and go east on US-70 towards Salisbury. We're about 7 miles from I-77 and about a mile north of US-70 near the Rowan County line. Anytime you're interested shoot me an email at [email protected] and I'll send you the specifics.
