I got the answer to my question on licensing for quail today, by calling both offices. The Ag office wasn't sure if I needed the Wildlife permit, but was quite sure I needed their hatchery permit. The Wildlife office was quite adamant that I needed both. Since the Wildlife one is $5, I figure it's a safe call anyway.
I did talk to them about NPIP. For some strange reason they have nothing in writing about this. He said it's on the agenda for next year! So that puts me out of it for now. I've learned my lesson with government stuff. I want it in writing before we begin.
Can ya'll tell me how to care for eggs sitting on the counter? I'm going to start collecting the silkies eggs to put in a friends incubator, can I sit them in an egg carton and just let them sit? Or do I need to turn them? Or what? Thanks!
I hand turn all of my eggs on the counter at least once a day. If they are not incubated in 14 days they become eating eggs, though I end up putting some in the fridge every day as we are getting so many.

I swear she could hatch a dinosaur egg![]()

I have no idea what a "green card" is, but from what I was told on the phone, including a call-back from them after they checked info, I need both the hatchery license and the gamebird one. The quail don't fall under the free poultry/ratite dealer license based on what I was told. The one I don't need is the pen-raised quail to sell for consumption, which is a totally different license through the same people. The only people consuming them will be us.
Too many licenses, and not enough people on the same sheet of music. It seems I need the Hachery license, the Hatching egg dealer license, the Chick dealer license, the Poultyr/ratite dealer license and the Wildlife Gamebird license. All this to sell eggs, chicks and adults of chickens, turkeys and quail. Sheesh.
edited to add....now I've found the written stuff, rather than just the applications, and they do indeed include quail in the list of poultry. So if I go by what is in writing, I only need the Poultry/ratite dealer, the Hatchery and the Wildlife gamebird licenses. Not the chick or egg dealer, as those involve being a middle-man. I wish I'd found this earlier. I'll go with what is in writing before I'll go with what someone told me on the phone. See? I should have asked the guy on the phone to give it to me in writing. It would have been simpler.
Thanks!
