Ok so today I stupidly picked up a cheap pair of d'uccles, the rooster has a problem, the top part of his beak curves down over the lower part, I guess he has a cross beak, I didn't realize the problem until I got him home. How do I fix this? Do I file or clip it? And what is the best way to hold him still?

Two people is best until you get the hang of it. Wrap him in a towel, and hold him securely. the trimmer take a good pair of human nail clippers and clip the beak (you may need to hold his wattles firmly to keep his head still. The edges of the beak should be lighter/thinner looking, trim there, one side and then the other side. cut the tip in a square and if needed file the sharp edges with a soft nail file. If you keep the beak trimmed regularly it won't get in his way. if he is grown it obviously doesn't impede his ability to eat so you shouldn't have to worry much at all.

Happy St. Patty's Day to you all!! I am SAD to report that there will be no Irish baby for us - looks like BHep has really "cursed" us to wait until the 27th!!

...perhaps those of you hatching will have better luck on getting some to hatch today. Busy day planned...I am going to finish DD's Easter dress (complete with bonnet and bloomers....hehe) while DH works on finishing the trim and paint in the sewing room. Once DD wakes up and it clears up outside, we're going to weed (EWEEE....taking volunteers) the garden & finish putting up the second set of barn doors on the coop!! Then...the coop will be raked and this week I will start buying more shavings to prepare for next weekend when we do a complete "overhaul" of the shavings!!

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Are you flippin' kidding me!? What is wrong with people. That makes me just so sad. :( I wouldn't have hesitated, not everyone is an idiot... though I'm guessing most idiots frequent Walmart. Grrrr.... Sorry, really I'm happy to vent with you!!!

Bhep, you wouldn't happen to have any decent breeder quality silkie roos? Splash or White or whatever? I'm still interested, but now I have a friend who wants one too. She' getting rid of her hatchery roos and want something to throw her some prettier babies. I'd have to drive him out to wilmington for her.

And I just had to say those chicks are doing AMAZING! I love them! So darn sweet and I guess because I checked on them constantly as they hatched, they are completely docile for me. Lets me pick them up and pet them and bring them treats, even mama lets me touch them. Though mama has been letting me do it for years since I always mess with her babies. I was even thinking of coming up to the WCA this weekend, but I don't know if I can until Saturday. I may have to help a friend out on Sunday because of the possible rain on Saturday and that will throw that off for me. We'll see. Didn't know if anyone else was going?
there is a whole website about thepeopleofwalmart.com complete jerks sorry that happened to you!

So I new job opportunity may have come up for me and I may need to move to the raleigh area.... With that said my coop isnt even done yet grrrrr. But if the money is right I can say no. Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew of a small farm or pseudo farm to rent with a farm house in the area I am ok with driving 45+ min to work so outside raleigh would be great. Dont want to live in all the congestion. Any help would be greatly appreciatied
thanks
Jon

Well, my incubator humidity has gone insane and spiking for no apparent reason other then yesterdays storm, but the one the days before didn't cause anything so I am stumped and doing some calibrating.

Happy St. Patty's day y'all!! I found 11 (yes, you heard that right 11) 4 leaf clovers this morning going to let out the chickens!!

how long have your eggs been incubatiing for? If they are not on Day 18 yest, i would lift the lid slightly, allow the humidity to go down and then replace the lid. Remember a hen does not always sit on her eggs, and I have found that lower humidity from day 1 to 18 is better so I add no water at all to my eggs on those initial days, then bump it up to around 60% for lockdown....

Same to ya, Beth wanted to tell you I have a cochin bantam sitting on 3 Muscovy eggs as of yesterday. Ducks weren't interested so my lil bantam came to the rescue the only problem she started out on 9 and I had to take all but 3 away she is just to tiny to keep anymore warm... So well see if she can make it 35 days... hope so.
