I looked up the Lakenvelders and decided I wouldn't pursue them likely. I don't see us with a flighty breed. Although I would like to be able to free range our chickens we are not able to. So ours stay in their covered run all the time. The lakenvelders are gorgeous birds though. My friend that told me about the ad did get some of the lakenvelders. If she shares pics of all her chicks I can probably figure out which variety of lakenvelders he has. She got a feather legged chick that she can't remember what the man said it was. She got a frizzle too!

I am so hoping there are some frizzles available when we go too.

So if I only want 4-6 hens to add to our flock. How many chicks will I need to hopefully end up with at least 4 hens? I am figuring the chicks are straight run. I know last year when we got our EEs we got 5 and only one ended up being a roo.

Can someone can give me a lesson on EE vs. Araucana vs. Ameraucana? I've read what the Wikipedia has on them and Im still just as confused!

EE are mixed breeds (crosses with ameraucanas) that lay pretty colored eggs. Araucana is a pure bred chicken which is rumpless and can have ear tuffs and beards. Ameraucanas are pure breeds that have beards. Ameraucanca only come is certain colors. http://www.ameraucana.org/ You can also look for threads here on BYC to look at and ask about the breed. Hope this helps.
Most hatchery "Ameraucana" are really Easter Eggers this include the chicks you find in feed stores. If you want REAL Ameraucanas look for breeders to get eggs or chicks from. If you get egg or birds off Craigslist be sure that they are true Ameraucanas by learning the colors they come. the web site above list the colors and has pictures of them.

We are expecting. One of my black sexlink hens went broody. So a friend gave us some black copper maran and rir eggs. If everything goes well, we should have some chicks on Monday/Tuesday.

Ok so today I stupidly picked up a cheap pair of d'uccles, the rooster has a problem, the top part of his beak curves down over the lower part, I guess he has a cross beak, I didn't realize the problem until I got him home. How do I fix this? Do I file or clip it? And what is the best way to hold him still?

Also adding to what Greenacre said -

Easter Eggers typically are an ameraucana cross, they can lay any color egg, can have any color body, beard or no beard. They do not breed true (you can breed 2 similar looking colored birds together and get a rainbow of colors in the chicks)

An ameraucana should lay only a nice blue shade egg, have beards, and have slate to olive colored legs. they only come in certain colors and breed true (breeding 2 birds the same color will give you offspring the same color)

Araucanas should lay a blue egg as well. They should not have a tail, and sometimes have the crazy ear tufts. They also breed true like the ameraucana.

If you want pets and layers Easter Eggers and hatchery/feedstore "ameraucana" are fine, but if you want a purebred bird go to a breeder for true ameraucana and araucana
