North Carolina

The last week or so have been long. Coop is almost finished, just needs a roof and windows now (and to be painted). But that is on hold. Have to replace our whole septic system. Had to move the run because that is where it is going. This is not the best time for this.
Started my heart treatments last week. One hour a day for 35 work days I have to be at the dr office. It really works out to be 1.5 hours. Puts a wrench in the day.
My chicks are getting bigger. I think 10 out of the 33 are hens

I am so impatient!!

Quick Broody question for those of you who have had/have broodies. Is it "normal" for her to kick an egg out of her nest? I don't know if another chicken "stole" the egg, but one of the eggs that I had marked, was out of her nesting box and in the adjacent nesting box - with no one on it, and it was cool to the touch. DH noticed it, and put it in front of her, but it's still too early to see if she pulled it back under her or not.

Also, WHY do all of the girls feel it necessary to lay in the exact same box that my poor sweet mama (who did try to peck me the other day when I was trying to look under her) is trying to sit on eggs?!? LOL, I watched two of the hens chase her out of the nesting box, lay eggs and then she went back in and sat on the fresh eggs and marked eggs.

I am NOT about to stick my hand under her again...I will just wait. LOL

I didn't make it to the auction, either, but wanted to! Instead, we fenced in our garden and added a few more "built-in" raised beds. I'm trying to make it a nice place to hang out as well as keeping it low maintenance. As it stands, my husband has to run the mower in between all the beds. We also added a "built-in" bunny cage and run. I call it my compost system. We have the most friendly lop eared bunny that came from WCA last year and he was overdue for a nicer setup.

I'm going to kill down the grass and mulch in between the beds and then I'll post pictures! I'm so excited!

put the egg under her, might still be good. you need to move her or make it so the other hens cant get to her. they will break the eggs and when a chick hatches they might kill and eat it.

From all i have read on here and my own hens its just something they like to do lay their eggs in the nest where the broody is sitting. probably because it's the fav. nest of all. I have alot of nice nest boxes but some days I go out and see my hens lined up waiting for the next hen to lay so she can get into That nest, even see 2 at a time in the box. Their crazy. And sometimes they will kick an egg out if it's no good too. Okay take a long walk, then tomorrow morning about 1:am you will go into labor, worked for me.
