New to raising chickens, and not even sure if this will make it to the correct thread, but I am in Wilson, NC. We have 6 baby chicks that are just a few days old, and was wondering if they can be put in the coop with a heat lamp and bedding yet? The coop is 4 x 4, and I would section off a smaller part for the chicks for now. Looks like for the next couple weeks, the lows will stay in the upper 50's and 60's. Any thoughts?

Me.... I would keep them inside until they start feathering out. You could put them out with a heat lamp. A VERY secure heat lamp to prevent fire. If you do put them out, it must be draft free.

My chicks are always started from Day 1 in a coop with heat lamp, bedding, food and water. And I've done it when I had to shovel snow away from the door to get in. As long as the heat lamp is working well (in cold temps, I usually run two, just in case.) and there are no drafts, they should be fine. Drafts are the big killer.

And hey....my dogs are spoiled, too! You could tell if you came by in the mornings and saw me trying to retrieve my covers from three mastiffs and a hubby who are all crowded into our queen sized bed!

I want a mastiff. One day I will have one. LOL Currently, no dogs are allowed in my bed, or on the sofa. Trying to calm an dog aggressive female. It has help but she would not pass the test. But I love my dogs. Now to get my old german shepard to stop chasing the chickens. What fun. He wants to love them to death (poor things are all wet when I get them away from him). Licks them from head to tail. Can to train an older dog ( he is 12 years old) to leave chickens alone ?

Yay she finally popped! I think her mom hasn't gone home yet either right? Wonder if they were on the way to the airport?

OH and with the announcement in pink are we to assume its a girl!?!?!
