LUKE- you could just let her sit for 3 weeks on dud eggs and one night slip a couple chicks under her, this way she can sit, but if she breaks early you don't lose any possible chicks developing. And if sh turns out to be a devoted broody then you get to have her raise some chicks! Good luck!

x2 That's what I do. I've got one broody out there now with chicks, and two more sitting on golf balls waiting for the incubator to hatch this weekend. I don't let them hatch their own anymore, as the fire ants take the nests when the eggs pip.

But I let them raise the chicks if I can, and if the chicks aren't super-special. Saves me work.

would she know how long it's been? if I do it sooner than the 21 or so?
on a side note when you go and try to move her she kind of hisses then you start petting her and she almost purrs like a cat! I'm in love!

I tried sulmet 4 the first 2 days and more died. So I went and got corid. Then three or so all that has died since stared that treatent. On third day now and no dead babies this morning. Only 1 died yesterday. What has me concerns is about the pens next to it. It is raining now and I will hav to wait till laterto bleach again. Shld I bleach the other pens? I did the pen below the brooder. It is 4 ft x 4ft w 4 lights. Too mny chicks in one place?(25)to start w down to 9. I hav 4 hens setting in the other pen and I m wanderning how bad the cocci cld be? Go ahead and treat the chick 4 cocci asap?or wait a week or?

After she is fully broody you can give her chicks to see if she will take them. I like to wait at least a week, but I have had hens take chicks even though they were only broody for 4 days. Just depends on if the hen is a going to be a good adopter. When you give her a chick just wait and listen. She should stop growling and start a soft cluck..cluck...cluck. Wait for the chick to pop it's head out to see the hens reaction and make sure she doesn't peck it.

Always have a back-up plan. If she doesn't adopt then you will need a brooder.

Oh and the chicks need to be as young as possible. More then 3 days old and they may not accept her.

The brooder is clean and awaiting some new babies....I guess I'll let her sit for another week or so and find some babies in the mean time and let her try to adopt them

Luke, just bring your hen to my house. I live in an anti-broody realm over here. I can't get a broody hen if I PAID for one. LOL
HAHAHAHA this is my first one and if she does it more often I'll let her be my incubator instead of buying one
