Good Morning Everyone!! It's going to be a great day here!! We are planning on having company stop by for a visit

which means I get to talk to someone over the age of 1.5!! LOL.

I am sad to report that I am almost convinced our sole chick is a rooster. It's not even 5 weeks old yet and is starting to develop a comb - if it would sit still long enough I might be able to see if I can see any waddles, but alas I am a big giant monster that is too scary to stand still for!! LOL. If it turns out to be a he, he will be named "Roaster" and earn a permanent vacation to freezer camp come 6months!! LOL
To add more sad news, we had 2 broody hens which we moved out of the coop to separate them...and they refused to sit on the eggs they were sitting on!! I don't know if it was too cold last night for them to sit (DH left the door open, so it was rather chilly) or if they are protesting the move. I honestly don't know. One of the hens ran into the coop this morning when I opened it up and was clucking and puffing herself up - there are no eggs in there, so I am not sure if she is going to try to sit in an empty box or not?!? The other one has refused to come down off the door of the broody coop and I guess is protesting us that way. It figures as I am set to get a bunch of eggs from people!! So please, keep your fingers crossed that they decide to forgive us and go back to sitting. I have baby chicken-itis!! Good thing I know Beth is an enabler and an incubator junkie!! Hehe!!

On a happy note,

WELCOME to all the new folks!!

Ramble away.............as you know, those humans with S.I. live normal lives, just have to remind caregivers of their condition in case of med emergency. So, if theory continues, Miss Indy should be fine, right? I just went through a bout with Sugar, disteTrinded crop, then sour, then impacted!! Tried, isolation, no food, warm tea + gas drops+massage, nothing, more of the same, nothing. Took her to an avairy rescue and she incised and removed a HUGE clog of grass!! She was new to our flock, had been in a not so good home, guess she just gorged herself out here with all the bugs, worms, grass, food and water!! Spent $50 (donation to rescue) to save a $5 chicken named Sugar..............well worth it!! She is as sweet as she was named!!

I know people do it, but I have never been able to relocate a broody hen. They chose where they wanted to brood, and that's where they want. It's not the eggs they care about so much as the place! I'd love to know the trick to relocating one.

Speaking of broodies...I took the last two chicks from that broody yesterday, and put them in the broody house with the other chicks. But last night, mama hen was sleeping against th ewall of the brood area, and the babies were sleeping against the other side, so they could talk to each other. It was going to be waaaayy too chilly for them not to use the heat, so I just grabbed Mama and tossed her in there, too. Since she wasn't protecting the chicks from anything outside, I didn't figure she'd be rough on the other brooder chicks. This morning, all are happy.

Oh! And I got a resident rat snake in the henhouse already this year! Yay! Look out mice, your nemisis has arrived! She did steal an egg, but I figure a few eggs to snakes are just a tithe to Mama Nature. Payment for the job of mice deterrent. It looks like a lovely grey rat snake, too. Hope she sticks around.

I need to go fill the snake water bowl. We keep one in there just for the snakes.

I hope Kristan B sees this one... it's my favorite.. can these be copied? I'd love to make one for my dh to put in the building with his Harley his b'd is Monday.

Feel free to copy it.... it was just too cute not to share.

Lovely story... and pretty hen. Thanks for sharing.

Hollow, I really admire the agreement you have with your snake friend! I don't mind snakes myself if they aren't a bother to me and I hate when people chop them up without realizing the benefits of them! (Not to say that it's not sometimes understandable to chop them up)

Does anyone know anything about South Fourty Poultry (that is how Fourty is spelled). They have an ad on Asheville crag'slist saying they will be at the Whistle Stop in Franklin on 12/12 with 1500 chicks. I could run over there if they are on the up and up, does anyone have any experience with them? I googled but came up with nothing. Thanks!
