Glad to hear that WCA went well for all of you that went. One day...one day I hope to actually have the experience of going!!

We are LOOKING for some ducks (meat/egg ones)- not sure how many yet, as DH is working on putting the whole system (now that he's figured out what he wants to do for/with the ducks) together this week. We'd prefer the ducks to be older (as in close to laying age, or at least big enough that a small hawk cannot take them) - especially with a hawk around. We will be out of town the first week of August, so if anyone has anything that will be available/ready after then, please PLEASE let us know!! Thank you!!

How cool is this?!? We were recently asked to sell our eggs to the coop that we buy our daughter's special food from (soy-free sheep's milk & soy free meat) for a whopping $5/dozen!! Too bad we don't have any eggs at the moment as production is WAY down with the heat and with the chickens going broody (not to mention the broody is stealing all the eggs, I think). When DH heard that, his response was: "Can I build another coop so we can get more chickens?!?" LOL

It looks like we may be building another coop (or just "attaching" another coop to the current one) for more chickens!! He even asked me what all we would need to incubate our own, so we don't have to rely on a broody!! Someone has gotten bit by the chicken bug BAD!! I think it's a good thing we do not go to WCA, or else we might end up coming home with WAY TOO many!!

Have a great day everyone!!

Too bad you didn't tell me sooner.... there were PLENTY of ducks at WCA yesterday and most went very cheep. Don't worry....we will snag you some when you are ready !

At $5 a dozen I would even give that new coop it's own A/C unit!

Hollow: do you have any extra fertile eggs? my youngest hen went broody and I didn't see one hatching egg at the swap saturday..... she seems to be VERY dedicated so far.
I figured I'd ask you since I think you're closest, and I could even trade my GF to clean for you!!!! HAHAHAHA

anyways the only thing worth a hoot I saw at the swap was this golden brahma I brought home for the low low price of $8 =)

Luke, I'm getting about three eggs a day right now from my old girls. I have a lot of birds, but most are not laying age. The ones that are laying do not have an adult rooster with them. Oh! except for a pair of bantams. She's laying. I could collect some of hers if you want them. Right now I'm cooking those for the doggies.

I don't think bantams would do well with my big girls.....if anyone close has eggs, please help! LOL

Figures!! Why does my DH have to wait until Sunday EVENING to tell me these things?!?

Well, at least we are moving forward and should have a set up ready by this weekend which will give me a few days to do a test run and then we can coordinate something after we get back?!? That'll be the perfect time for me to start picking your brains on all things ducks (and guineas)!! ETA: Will the ducks need to be in quarantine when they arrive here or are chickens "immune" from any duck illnesses?!?

DH wants to set the coops up on their own solar powered grid system!! He's on this big solar kick right now (perhaps it's because our power has been flickering with all these huge storms...and we live in the middle of nothing...LOL) and has already done a bunch of research on outfitting our home with solar panels to off set what we use during the day so we would only live "on the grid" at night. Now he's thinking of ways to make the coops fully functional (complete with a batter back up) on solar power!! This leads me to say that while I love the chicken math...I think he's gone a bit off the deep end...and I am LOVING IT!! LOL

I forgot to share with you what my husband said after WCA yesterday. I had called him to tell him I was coming home empty-handed.
yesss.gif
Then I texted him to tell him I was bringing home two Wyandotte hens from Beth.

Then I called him on the way home to tell him that those hens had multiplied into an additional eight SL Wyandotte chicks.

I told him it was all Beth's fault.

And that she was cutting back, which is why I could get the hens from her.

And he laughed and said that if there is one thing he has learned, it's that chicken people never cut back. They just rearrange.
