I know snakes can have their "good" uses... but I hate snakes and they all die around here.

On another note... we went to WCA yesterday and it was hot & sticky... of course. Another day with a lot of small guineas sold.... there were some Swedish Flower Hen chicks, there... that was the first time I have ever seen SFH sold at any auction. About 5 boxes with 4-5 chicks in each.... sold for around $7 per chick. (They weren't as pretty as Beth's, though).

A Huge pregnant Sow was "no sold"... buyer wanted $200 but bid didn't go over $50. Most stuff went pretty cheap. There were some really skinny/sickly goats... sold for around $20-$30-ish.
DH bought a couple game pairs for a friend... who came by and picked them up later that night.

I bought a pair of black mottled d'uccles, a pair of buff bantam cochins & 3 birchen modern game bantam roos... (anyone looking a modern game bantam roo... let me know - I am keeping only one of them and the other 2 are looking for a good home or headed back to the auction.)

Just for the record, if anyone captures any non-venomous snake within an hour or so of me and wants it gone, I'll be glad to come get it. We're fond of snakes around here. They keep the mice under control and although they eat a few eggs, I've never lost a bird to one. Not even a chick. So just let me know, and I'll come fetch.

I'd rather not have the venomous sort with the Boys running around, though.

One of the instructors at WCC takes the venomous snakes to have them mapped and measured for the Raleigh Nature..., and if we don't find them with the birds we leave them alone to their work, or turn loose in a thicker part of the property (away from dwellings). If we do find another that we cannot turn back out because it has already been in the bird dwellings I will definately write you, but I don't know how far you are from us to know if you can. I am open though!

This one was released into the brush. Point of reference the hubby is over 6'. The one from the coop would have had no problem taking out a bird. This one would have to pick a little smaller, and was let go.

The one that did not get let loose below. If you are not too far, and we come by another one like this, I like your option!

I'd come up Raleigh way, or out toward Charlotte. There's always something else to do somewhere, even if it's hunt down the local yarn shop! And I have a son in Boone who would collect for release, too. (Although he'll try to talk you out of hackle feathers for fly tying!) Usually I have neighbors and colleagues who provide me with snakes in the summer, but I didn't get a single one from anyone this year!

I'm exhausted today, and just waiting for sundown so I can put chickens and turkeys to bed and go myself!

Ok everyone, I'll be crossing the state a few times starting Friday. I'll be heading to Gboro, then to Salisbury, Huntersville, Charlotte, then along the bottom of the state to the beach then back up towards Raleigh.

If anyone needs any birds to hitch a ride let me know and I'll see if I can work it out.

I am currently searching for some GOOD quality bantam cochins. I haven't chosen a color yet but really like the barred ones, Calico, and Mottled. If anyone has any for sale along my route please let me know so I can try to make plans to stop and see/buy them.

to all the new people!!

So...all my chickens survived, it looks like our sitter took good care of our chickens. Question to you all...I have 2 broodies (one went broody right as we were leaving) who are stealing one anothers' eggs. My question is possibly a weird one, but is it possible for an egg thief to interfere with the hatch timing? I thought (hey, it could be post pregnancy amnesia too) I had some chicks schedule to hatch on Thursday, but not one egg has hatched...and the eggs that are suppose to be under our buff is now under our Maran (the Maran was sitting on 4 unmarked eggs before we left, now she has 12 (half of those marked) and the buff has 4 - all nonmarked. Am I off base, or should they have hatched by now? DH says knowing my luck I am a week early, but I am still worried...nothing smells horrid though, so I don't suspect that I have bad eggs. Advice?? Thank you in advance!!

By the way...it feels SO GOOD to be home...remind me again WHY I went away?!?

Yes the timing can be thrown off, but should not be more then a 12-24 hours. That is only if the eggs get cooled while being moved.

The best advice I can give is to get a good mini-mag or similar flashlight, put in new batteries, and go candle the eggs. Even if someone has never candled you should be able to see if the eggs are clear.

HeHe lots of great stories.... hope everyone is well.

Gave my babies half a cantalope today it was fun watching them enjoy the fruit.

My chicks are getting adventurious and exploring the yard (they can get out the run in a corner that i need to fix) Thankfully my dog does not bother them. but it is funny watching them run back to the coop when the rooster calls them.

i love chicken Tv

I have plenty of extra birds to thin down, but not the breed you were looking for. I live just outside of Goldsboro if any one wants to pick some out.

They are so funny, I have been sharing the goodies from the garden with them. We found a few tomato horn worms a while back, and one of the first 6 is still with us knows exactly what to do with gummie worms.

Our sweet corn did not do as well as we would like, but not a complete waste; the birds are loving it!

They are so funny, except the few older roosters that are picking on the Partridge Plymoth Rocks.
