North Carolina

My company didn't get here until nearly 4:00 pm today. So, that means they've been here for five and a half hours...and I'm exhausted! I'd forgotten that some kids will just suck all the energy out of a room, and you too. Good kids, these, but very high energy and Very talkative. With my youngest about to turn 27, I'm very out of practice on younglings. One is about to start second grade, the other fourth. They want a spinning lesson tomorrow, to which I agreed, but on an older spinning wheel I have stored in the barn. They love the Boys, although Reilly is afraid of the youngest. He's not had much traffic with kids, and I think they just move too fast for him. He's not too worried about the older one, but that little one pings from one place to the next. Reilly even went and hid in my bathroom!

I'm telling you all this because I'd like some entertainment ideas. These are city kids who live in Miami. They can get to the beach in five minutes, but they aren't used to much greenery around them. They collected eggs this afternoon and wrote their names on them for breakfast. They petted sheep. They petted a turkey. They counted chickens. They ran with dogs, carried the barn cat around, hung out in the swing in the grape arbor, ate homegrown chicken and caprese salad for supper and my Krispie Treats for dessert.

I've suggested we go out to eat tomorrow, and spend some time at the park where there is a huge playground. Maybe they'll burn off some energy that way. What else can I do??? I am overwhelmed by good kids!
find some other high energy kids about their age and send them to a patch of yard to play, they'll wear each other out. Or have them catch sheep for you

Good Morning, Everyone!

Got all the chores done and the bacon cooked and the kids are still asleep. Getting in a couple deep breaths...and hopefully a shower...before they get up.

Taking them away for all day won't work well, as I still have chores to do here. (And RF, letting them chase my livestock just isn't in the picture!

) They need things to do here. However, they are very excited about a fun opportunity that hubby offered them. They are going to clean out a chicken house! They think that is very exciting.

Since I don't expect them to last through it, I'm designating the smallest one...Juvenile Detention! It's only 8 x 8 feet. Let's see what they can do with it.

I wish I knew people with kids to invite over, but actually all the people I know with kids are...you guys! Or my sisters, but they are two states away and no help here. All of my other friends either have grown kids or no kids. That's what happens when you're old!

I do have a croquet set and a badmitten set we put out for kids and anyone else when we have a party. I don't think horseshoes is safe for ones that age, though. I'll have hubby get those out, and make sure the dogs are inside when those are in play. Reilly would eat balls, birdies, and anything else that gets left unattended.

We'll keep working on it. Thanks for suggestions!
Have a great day, everyone!

I got my coop finished and loaded with my five little chicks yesterday. We are having the best time with them. I really love this new backyard chicken hobby! Here are a few pictures and the link to my coop build! Thanks to everyone who helped me learn so much...so far! We can't wait for the first egg to arrive...about Nov. 18 or so. My son looked up at me the other day and said, "Dad. thanks for getting these chicks for me. I love them!" Of course, I melted.

More to come as our little girls grow up.
If you are in the city limits of Goldsbobo there is not an ordinance for backyard chickens, but I did get a draft (copy) because people were asking me about it and I did not have an answer for them. It was explained to me that the local citizens in the city limits need to speak to (call) one of 6 council persons and explain what they want or need of urban gardening. For those in the city limits, please don't say that you have chickens if you do when calling. If people do not know which of the 6 members is theirs, I have a number to call at the planning board to find out. She was very helpful, and expressed her enthusiasm for the urban garden benefits; for the council members to speak for the community they must first hear what the community expects. Even if this is not of help to you; it is out there. There may be others who don't know.

That has got to be the most beautiful chicken tractor I've ever seen. Elegant.
