Good Morning everyone!!
I must say I am SO happy today is Friday, but then I realize I have company coming tomorrow and I am NOT ready!! My order of flour came so I can at least start making bread & rolls for tomorrow's cookout. Now to decide on dessert....hmmm...

On a chicken note: we either have had a chick hatch or one of the girls ate/crushed an egg. Not sure whose egg it was as it was between them, but I do not see a chick anywhere (granted my BO will not get up off her nest for anything!!) so perhaps that's what happened to the other disappearing eggs?!? Poor Jemimiah - she's been sitting on eggs for over 3 weeks now - hmm...can I put guineas under her?!? LOL that would be a shock for her...to "wake up" one morning with a brood of feathered out guineas!!

I hope she at least is eating/drinking. I put a HUGE tomato in there for them to munch on as a treat and I cannot say whether or not she ate it, as I have said before - I haven't seen her get up ONCE!!

Now...off to come up with dessert for our cookout. Have a wonderful day everyone!!
I don't know about putting other birds under her,

but I think a broody bird will sit on any ones eggs. May not be every hen, but many would. If her eggs don't hatch out soon, and you can't look under her, you may want to put her out for her own health. We had one that stayed in the coop to avoid the roosters, and another that would not let my son look under her. He went out there with work gloves on, a few times, and now she still puffs up a bit and sounds not nice, but she does not intimidate him any more. he pets around the ear, and then lifts on her with the other hand. I hope you have babies soon; it seams like you shoud be able to hear them through the shell if you could get to them. peep!

How about peach cobbler??? There are lots fresh right now. yum...

These Guinea "chicks" I have here for you are already fully feathered and ready to roll. I will get with you for a day next week.

i am looking for another myself maybe we can order 2?

I just checked the website, it's a 16-18 chick minimum. I WISH I could have that many  we live with an HOA...thankfully we convinced them to amend the covenants to allow hens, but we're limited to 6. We currently just have room for one more and try to maintain truthful and possitive relationships, so we don't want to push it.

Just a little update...we lost 5 this weekend (4 to a dog "we think" and one that was sick). The four were right at 20 weeks old (our Splash Orp pair, a Black Star, and an Easter Egger), and the sick one was a 17 week old Bantam Cochin. This was our first loss since starting our chicken family in February. It just made me sick to my stomach, but I know it comes with the territory.

I took the kiddos to pick out two layers yesterday and I'm saving room to get more at Chickenstock (in my hometown) in September.

Okay, Ive done a little digging and I think i finally figured out what my mutt chicks are.
2 Buff Orp x Brahma (Mellow and Yellow)
1 Buff Orp x Austrolorp (Leroy)
1 Buff Orp x Buff Orp (unnamed as of yet)

Now Im (fairly) good at sexing single combed chicks (1 boy, 1 girl from what I can see without getting too close) BUT I have no experience whatsoever in sexing pea combs. I hear its harder than single combs but not so hard as sexing a silkie

Are there any tricks I should know about? When should I be able to tell their gender? They are a week old as of yesterday. I know its early but my moms really cracking down on me about having too many roos. I want to be prepared so that I can take them to either my local TSC or Chickenstock if they should turn out to be boys.

Thanks, Lenore

Oops, I wasn't suppose to admit that, was I?? LOL. Whatever works for you, we will make work for us!! DD2 has a dr apt Tuesday morning, but other than that, NOTHING is on the schedule!! Hehe...let me know if you want me to take anything else off your hands as well!! Oh, and you know I'm always more than willing to come your way (I feel bad you keep coming out my way!!). Do the kids have any special requests?? I know my DH LOVED those chocolate peppermint cookies!!

On a side note...I have been thoroughly enjoying "tormenting" the hawk. I've been giving the chicks snacks by the house and the poor hawk keeps trying to figure out how to get to them without getting near to me.

Love it!! Pretty funny and can't complain because I am not doing anything "wrong" right?!?

Hmmm.. I don't suppose you want some "calico sweet grass" turkey poults... do you? I have 6 in the brooder (about a week old). We hatched them out but I don't need them... because my turkey hen is sitting on eggs.
