Good Morning, Everyone!

CSB, I also saw lots of wind farms up in Illinois this summer. I think solar would be the ticket here. Hubby and I have discussed putting up solar panels on the shop roof. Expensive to start up, though.

See you guys later. Gotta let the birds out and head off to work!

Have a great day, everyone!

Thank you all for your advice!! DH made the final decision and decided that he is just not comfortable with a rooster (even though he does his job well) that is THIS aggressive. He's been randomly attacking the one all week...he would go so far as to run across the yard just to attack him. I made excuses and justified it as "normal" but hearing what others have said...I too am just not comfortable with him around. I am deeply saddened as he is such a beautiful rooster!! We have also decided NOT to allow his offspring (our current 4-5mo rooster who is a Cochin/orp mix) to replace him!! We planned for him to be "roaster" and I don't want to relive this experience EVER again!! We will be looking to get a good sweet rooster in the near future. What are some good suggestions on dual purpose roosters?!? We currently have BLRW (LOVE THEM) chicks...well a pair actually, a pair of black & white chicks (not sure what they are!! LOL), BSL chicks, 2 cochins, 2 blk/1buff/1lav orp, 1 EE/Marans mix, & 2 Marans.... I'd love something with a known sweet temperament BUT NOT a "foo-foo" bird. DH does NOT want any silkies, polish, or other "ornamental" birds. LOL

Just had my 2nd hawk attack ever. The birds started making a bunch of noise, so I went out and seen it swoop down and take off. I go look at the silkie pen, where it swooped down at. Theres chicks in there that go under the wire in a spot and are out almost all day unless momas call them. Well sure enough, one blue is missing.

So I finally got off my butt and rigged it for the moment, so they cant get out now. Haven't even seen a hawk all year around here.

Hey all.... had to come look at all the new pictures of the chickens! (and guineas!) Adorable!

I'm thinking of going to WCA next week. I have a neighbor who wants to be rid of a Easter Egger Hen who his other chickens have been picking on, and I really need to get Lily a friend. She's so lonely all locked up. :( She gives me the sad face whenever I check on her.

So who else is planning on going?
We are planning on going! I did not realize how many birds have gone, but I still have soooooo.... many boys! They will start roosting on each other if I don't clear out the first 2 runs.

I was told that they would have crates there so I will most likely go out this Sunday with most of the largest cockerels, and then go from there in the next few weeks. I don't think I will let so many beautiful boys grow out next year. Some are already 25 weeks... And BIG!

I would like to replace my Ameracauna girls that were lost during the mess we had here in the spring. I am very partial to the breed. 5pinkbunnies brought me 3 young men, and I wanted the one in particular, so I think he will need some more pullets to mate with in the fall or spring.
Thank you, Stacey, for the beautiful little men you brought to me.

One of these will most likely need a new home, as I can only have so many boys over the winter. My son is getting attached to the other, so he may have to stay as well, so I need to go ahead and decide wether or not he is staying. If so, he too will need a few little hens in his future.

I am so sorry to here that; we live with that threat here, and a few other predatory birds as well.

One day about 2 years ago Jacob and I were in the big run throwing out treats to the hens, and there was a big one in there with us and we did not know it at first. Then Jacob only about 3 spoke up and said, "That's a bad bird mommy." I responded by telling him that we don't have any bad birds. Then he retorted with, " But mommy, that is a really bad rooster!" The birds had camouflaged so well in the fall leaves that it was not so obvious, and he was only so many feet from us, and had a black hen. We had others disappear before, and had only found one feather up until this point in time, but that one was scary! I hope you don't loose any more, I know how unhappy you must feel about this.

I have plenty of cockerels, if you want to pick one out that you like before I take them to auction on Sunday. So sorry for your loss. I have heard of some becoming agressive like that, but have not gone thru it. I too, would get rid of a roo that behaved in that manner because of my children. If he has been doing that to all roos in your flock, don't feel bad; you did what you must. pm me if you want to pick one out.

I highly recommend an Orpington roo for temperament. Most of mine become serious pets. And they come in Buff, Black, Blue, Splash, Lavender, and assorted other fancy colors. Big, gentle boys, for the most part. I have seen one bad-tempered one, but only one. Brahmas are supposed to have really good tempers, too. I haven't met enough to know yet.

I think her roo was an orp. That's what shocked me. NH- maybe a nice fluffy Cochin roo. Or a maybe a brahma roo.
