Tylan 50 works alot better injected just under the skin. While holding the bird I seperate the feathers on the back, lift the skin, and inject in the loose skin. The bubble of meds will adsorb quickly. I have treated both ways in the past and the injected gets into the system much faster.

Some inject directly in muscle, but when a couple of my Dutch got sick a few years ago the muscle injections almost killed them. Even with a lower dosage a muscle injection can cause damage around the injected area. Most birds it won't affect badly, but some it will.

Kitchen garden fall crop is in and looking good, after this year's monster of July heat, the cooler temps are oh so welcomed! The chickens are happy as clams now too.

Well...First off, let me thank you all for your wonderfully kind thoughts/messages & hugs. They have been most appreciated!! Our vet came out yesterday to check on my kitty and I did have to make the hard, but right decision to let him go. She found some "secondary" issues - the ones that had me worried in the first place, but she also found (what she called) a rapidly growing tumor in his abdomen the size of a very large tennis ball or a small softball. I knew something more serious was going on because he was losing weight and yet his abdomen was still "full" looking. I thought he had some fluid retention or something less severe (I actually thought the secondary causes were the cancer). She let me feel his belly to palpitate the tumor so I was confident I was doing the right thing. He fell asleep peacefully in my arms and my amazingly wonderful husband not only left work early (took today off too), but spent the evening in the pouring rain burying him and placing him next to his "girlfriend". It has been an amazing 14 years and he will be missed!! DD#1 does not understand, she keeps asking to "find" Wesley and even though we told her he was in Heaven with Lizzie, she keeps asking to go see him. Breaks my heart, but I know she will come to understand someday. I did not allow her to see him resting peacefully, because I didn't know if that would be wise or not...Snickers; however, was able to smell Wesley and she actually licked his face a few times and tried to work her way into his favorite blanket - the one we wrapped him up in. VERY emotional day/night...I fear today when it all sinks in will be worse.

RIP Wesley and enjoy your time on the Rainbow Bridge with Lizzie!!

On a happier note: the vet who rarely goes to farms was having a blast watching her tech hand feed our chickens & guineas...the ducks were not sure about them and when the camera came out...they decided to go forage instead. So our vet visit ended with the Doctor taking photos of our chickens and her tech (I gave her a bowl of oatmeal that DD1 didn't finish to feed them...it was like crack). Explaining the molting process was also fun, as she was "concerned" that a few of my chickens were bare. However, the funniest part was trying to explain to them the purpose of a saddle and why my chicken was "wearing clothes"!! LOL Ah, non-chicken people just don't get it!! You all are wonderful...thanks again!!

Good Morning everyone!

Yesterday was lots of fun! Our house and workshop got struck by lightning.

Luckily, our house is equipped with lightning rods, so other than a VERY bright light and a VERY loud noise, all was well. The workshop doesn't have a lightning rod, so the TV that Carl* keeps out there got fried...we think.

*Carl lives in a camper behind our house...it's hard to explain but not as weird as it sounds. He has a cow in our pasture he named Trouble. I call it Dinner.

In addition, I discovered the phrase "mad as a wet hen" has some basis in fact. All seven of our girls chose to stand out in the rain yesterday rather than go into their nice dry coop or under it. As a result, by about 11am yesterday morning they were looking very bedraggled, and when I went in the run to collect eggs I got the stink eye from ALL of them...not just Scarlet the Grumpy Chicken. I would've had a LOT more sympathy for them if it weren't for the fact that they had dry places to go, they just weren't using them.

I have a question:

What are the rules and regulations for selling eggs? We've been giving our extras away to neighbors, but some of them have asked about buying eggs.

TY!!

Today is a really bad day for me. I found my "baby boy" (aka my cat Wesley...named after a boyfriend of mine who was tragically killed in a work accident almost 15 years ago) laying in the bathtub letting the water drip on him (yay for drips). He would never even go near a tub let alone in one!! I have known his health has been failing as of late, but to be honest, I just didn't want to accept it. I am having a hard time letting go and yet today, I called the vet in...I am asking her to make the decision for me. I do not want him suffering and at the same time, I do not want to let him go. Needless to say, I have been a basket-case ever since finding him. Thankfully both DD's are napping so I have a chance to compose myself before they wake. I have NO idea how to explain what is most likely going to happen to my very inquisitive child! I don't know when the vet will swing by...sometime this week I expect and oh boy, I am having a hard time just thinking about it. Rough week ahead!! Thanks everyone for letting me vent!! I know this is a chicken forum, but I also knew you all would understand how our pets can be like family!!

So sorry for your loss, I know how badly that hurts, but you did the right thing and you now have another friend at the Rainbow Bridge!

I need a plan for a small (cheap and easy) A-frame shelter with roost and nest box for these three rogue chickens that roam my yard. I can use a milk crate for a nest box, just not sure how to set it all up. With cooler weather and them starting to lay, they need a place, they have been roosting on top of my run under the overhang of the roof. But that is not much shelter from the cooler weather and I think one of the hens is laying, but Lord knows where.

The roo previously known as Houdini currently traveling under the psuedo-name Elvis, has been attacking my little old pomeranian to the the point where he won't go off the porch to pee! Not sure how to handle that one.

Hope everyone has a great Hump day!

See what I made yesterday!
