Well, everyone, I guess I can officially be titled a "Fair Weather BYCer." I am here religiously during incubating and brooding, and I disappear when I quit. I still stalk, I promise....I just don't have a lot to offer.
BHep - I saw your post about your Guineas breeding - it rang true with me, for the past couple of days, I've noticed my male Guineas scuffling (different to see after they've been pal-ing around for the past several months). COME ON GUINEA-GIRLS, GET TO LAYIN!!!!! I'm trying to remember when I started getting my first Guinea eggs last Spring, guess I need to go over to the Guinea board - I am pretty dang sure I would have posted on there exactly 2.7 seconds after I found my first egg. LOVE finding those guinea eggs.
BHep - also, wanted to put a bug in your ear....I am looking for a good SLW roo for my pretty girl. Let me know if you know of a handsome boy who is looking for his better half.
My flock is healthy. Not sure why my SFH girls aren't laying - they are now nine months old. Thriving and gorgeous, but not laying. I'm guessing it's the time of year. I'm not too concerned, but your wisdom and thoughts, as always, are more than welcome. But I tell you what.....those bators are calling my name.
My beautiful, sweet Buff Cochin girl suddenly went blind. I am busy these days tweaking and trying to create an environment she can function in, and driving home every four or five hours to make sure she is getting what she needs food and water-wise. It's been about a week, and I think we have a system that she can manage....it is a cage that is a bit smaller than I would like, but it seems to allow her to find her food and water a LOT more easily than she was managing in a larger one. I am supplementing her with polyvisol. Her eyes are clear, but she simply no longer can see.

In the smaller cage, I am seeing a big difference in the way she is "honing in" on the food and water, as opposed to the way she was acting before, spinning in circles, seemingly a bit out of control but trying so hard to find it, while being distracted constantly by sounds etc. She is getting a little more coordinated every day.
We have acquired a pot-belly pig. I did NOT want one, but she was in need of rescue, and I couldn't say no. She is a joy. Her name is Bella, and she is a year old. I am learning every day. She lives in the barn (makes a comfy bed out of shavings in "her" stall) and roams around outside all day. She makes us laugh all the time, what a character. We have so many stories already. I guess she has found a forever home.........
I am looking for a SLW rooster, a young one but breeding age, for my pretty girl. My husband really likes her, and wants more, and since he is the one that builds coops and pens to my hearts desire, I want to get a roo for our hen.
One last thing I want to share - our neighbor has just recently signed an agreement to lease out his farm to an Emu breeding operation, which he will manage. We went over there to see the initial setup, and y'all, when I walked into the barn, I heard angels sing.........> big shiny brand new commercial incubators in climate controlled insulated rooms!!!!! Commercial hatchers and brooders!!!!! All shiny and spotless and new!!! He had one incubator filled up with beautiful Blue Emu eggs. I hope he will let me come help with the babies!!!
good to be back. Y'all let me know if you have any experience with a blind bird. She is doing OK, but I feel like I could do better helping her - I am new to this situation.
