North Carolina

When I got ready to come to the coast of NC across SC and Ga I was told I had to have A1,pyllorumm, and a type of typhoid. I had to get the cty to send the man that does the A1 NPIP testing. I had that done but I was not checked even once. Good luck. Gloria Jean

Well, everyone, I guess I can officially be titled a "Fair Weather BYCer." I am here religiously during incubating and brooding, and I disappear when I quit. I still stalk, I promise....I just don't have a lot to offer.

BHep - I saw your post about your Guineas breeding - it rang true with me, for the past couple of days, I've noticed my male Guineas scuffling (different to see after they've been pal-ing around for the past several months). COME ON GUINEA-GIRLS, GET TO LAYIN!!!!! I'm trying to remember when I started getting my first Guinea eggs last Spring, guess I need to go over to the Guinea board - I am pretty dang sure I would have posted on there exactly 2.7 seconds after I found my first egg. LOVE finding those guinea eggs.

BHep - also, wanted to put a bug in your ear....I am looking for a good SLW roo for my pretty girl. Let me know if you know of a handsome boy who is looking for his better half.

My flock is healthy. Not sure why my SFH girls aren't laying - they are now nine months old. Thriving and gorgeous, but not laying. I'm guessing it's the time of year. I'm not too concerned, but your wisdom and thoughts, as always, are more than welcome. But I tell you what.....those bators are calling my name.

My beautiful, sweet Buff Cochin girl suddenly went blind. I am busy these days tweaking and trying to create an environment she can function in, and driving home every four or five hours to make sure she is getting what she needs food and water-wise. It's been about a week, and I think we have a system that she can manage....it is a cage that is a bit smaller than I would like, but it seems to allow her to find her food and water a LOT more easily than she was managing in a larger one. I am supplementing her with polyvisol. Her eyes are clear, but she simply no longer can see. :( In the smaller cage, I am seeing a big difference in the way she is "honing in" on the food and water, as opposed to the way she was acting before, spinning in circles, seemingly a bit out of control but trying so hard to find it, while being distracted constantly by sounds etc. She is getting a little more coordinated every day.

We have acquired a pot-belly pig. I did NOT want one, but she was in need of rescue, and I couldn't say no. She is a joy. Her name is Bella, and she is a year old. I am learning every day. She lives in the barn (makes a comfy bed out of shavings in "her" stall) and roams around outside all day. She makes us laugh all the time, what a character. We have so many stories already. I guess she has found a forever home.........

I am looking for a SLW rooster, a young one but breeding age, for my pretty girl. My husband really likes her, and wants more, and since he is the one that builds coops and pens to my hearts desire, I want to get a roo for our hen.

One last thing I want to share - our neighbor has just recently signed an agreement to lease out his farm to an Emu breeding operation, which he will manage. We went over there to see the initial setup, and y'all, when I walked into the barn, I heard angels sing.........> big shiny brand new commercial incubators in climate controlled insulated rooms!!!!! Commercial hatchers and brooders!!!!! All shiny and spotless and new!!! He had one incubator filled up with beautiful Blue Emu eggs. I hope he will let me come help with the babies!!!

good to be back. Y'all let me know if you have any experience with a blind bird. She is doing OK, but I feel like I could do better helping her - I am new to this situation.

We'll check there tomorrow and if not, looks like we are gonna have to look in Raleigh for one

Its alright, I was hoping they had one

Have you called Dr. Garret's on Ft. Bragg Rd. or North Star clinic in Parkton?

The guy who works on my jeep has a sister that works at North Star so we are gonna check with them tomorrow :)

Good morning folks

We finally got a few days of somewhat heavy frost
in the morning and then it will warm up again.........
although it's still riding the weather roller coaster
I can appreciate the watm breaks between cold
spells. I still remember the winters from when
we lived in Michigan and how it seemed like the
warm would never come back soon enough......
it is nice that the weekend will be warm enough
to get things done outside and not be miserable
while working outside.

hope your day is a good one

Good Morning, Happy People!

Looking forward to the upcoming warm spell, too! We postponed the sheep until then, as we need to shear them before they go to slaughter. They'll be more comfortable if it's warmer.

House Chicken is still doing well with the younger juvies. I think she'll do okay staying with them for now, but that will postpone their moving until she's fully healed.

I did a count on what the foxes left me. Ten RIR, with at least one cockerel. A pair of GLW. Two EE pullets (plus House Chicken). And eight Wellies, but no remaining cockerel. Of the older Orpingtons from Daddy, nine pullets remain, one ugly cockerel, and the white unknown roo...who should have been the one hawked!

There's still the 26 BOs that are younger, and three more babies in the house. My egg color potential got reduced losing so many EEs, though.

I do have eggs in the incubator, and more to be in the mail before too long, for summer grow out. And chicks ordered for spring. And soon I'll be over run with chickens again!

Enjoy your day, everyone!

ACK!!! I was supposed to move my eggs from my Reptipro to my hatcher to lock down today and while i was on the computer browsing BYC I thought i heard a peep. I turned around and looked and I had a baby peeper looking at me from the incubator window still sitting upright in its shell!

So I gabbed all the eggs super quick and moved them all to the waiting hatcher. I must have wrote the hatching date wrong. Lucky for the lil one, it seemed moist and had no trouble getting out even though I dry hatch in my reptipro and only add humidity in the hatcher. What have I done?

Fingers crossed for the other two that were pipped already when i moved them. I hope they hatch ok now that they are humidified and in the hatcher. I have 8 silkie eggs that i moved with them that are likely on the right hatch date due on Friday! Sheesh!
