North Carolina

Hello everyone! I have been on before but this is officially my first post as a chick owner. My order got here this morning with a lovely call at 6 am from my rural post office. i ordered from MMcM. I ordered their Meat and Egg combo with additional chicks of Auracauna and a few others to make my 25. Actually got 27 and one looked down for count but I watered every chick and put some sugar in water, I remembered reading that on this site somewhere. Anyway the little one has sprung back to life. Hoping it stays that way.
My 3.5 year old is so excited and will not leave them alone. Surely this will fade slightly as they become less cute. Anyway I have been reading this site for so long I was excited just to become a part of it.

Here is to happy hens!
Amanda

It's good to see new folks trickle into our lovely little forum.

Hi everyone! It's been forever since I've been on - the job I started in November is 4pm to 2:30am, and by the time I drive an hour (plus a little) to get home, I'm just too tired to check on the forums!

I have a question for you guys here in North Carolina: We're wanting to add to our flock, but we DON'T want to do it with chicks. Anybody know of anyone who's got good, healthy laying chickens they're wanting to sell? They don't have to be laying when we get them, they just have to be old enough to be outside in the quarantine run.

In other news, we lost our first chicken.

We kind of expected it. It was our cross-beaked girl - she never put on the kind of weight the other girls did, and she couldn't really keep her feathers neat like the others. Hubby went out to let the girls out on the morning after the first really cold night we had and she didn't come out. It wasn't cold in the coop, we think she just couldn't handle the drop in temperature. She did live longer than we expected (the cross beak was pretty severe - she had to eat out of a dog dish), and she was a happy chicken while she was with us.

Good morning folks

The girls had started to kick it in gear and
picked up on the eggs......or at least some of
them have. The boys though don't seem to be
doing their part or the is it the girls aren't in the
mood yet. I am wondering if the girls will slow
down with the fresh rush of cold or if they will
keep up the production line and if love is in the
air.....at least enough for me to get some chicks

hope you have a good day

Good Morning, Happy People!

NCNarrator...so good to see you! Hope the job is good, even if it's far. Hopefully, someone will have some birds for you.
O
No losses yesterday, but haven't done chores yet this morning. Took our own pup out to the chicken moat on a leash for the first time. He's agile enough to dodge Bob now, if need be. Bob thought he was okay, since he was on a lead. He did come inspect him closely. Levi did try to chase birds a few times, but called back and never had to be snatched back by the leash. Then I got a scoop of crack...I mean scratch...and put it down in front of us. Levi was actually more interested in the scratch than the birds. Off to a good start.

Hubby wanted to eat out yesterday for some reason, so put the almost-finished supper in the fridge and went.

Enjoy the day!

Good morning everyone. I need some help. My straight run flock is now four months old and I have 14 cockrels that need new homes. It's like Chicken Caligula around here! My girls are constantly looking over their shoulders in fear of the next "servicing ". I am in Lincolnton if anyone is interested. 9 RIR and 6 Barred Rock. Still looking for pullets to replace said horny teenagers.

NH... Since you will be recovering during your In-laws visit, you could ask MIL to cook. As a great way to help you.

This way you don't have to worry about it and FIL will eat what his wife makes.
Also... the "blueish/white" birds are Barred Rocks. The black and white are Silver Laced Wyandottes, the others are Easter Eggers.

Now IF ONLY I could actually remember that!! LOL. DH keeps telling me the girls are out again...what are they? I respond...escape artists - because I couldn't remember!! I'll blame pregnancy amnesia!!

NH...time to put your foot down. Blame it on pregnancy hormones. Actually, time to put hubbys foot down. HE can blame it on pregnancy hormones. That time is not convenient, as you want bonding time with your new baby, but X time or Y time or even Z time would work well and you'd love to see them then. Use those hormones, Girl!
Good morning folks

I definitely think love is in the air...at least around here!!

I have Tyrone my rooster who has been "sowing his oats" on all the available females - the older ones are NOT happy about it and put up the loudest fuss. My HUGE blue sexlink rooster isn't doing his business, but he's the one who is actually crowing. I never realized how much I missed hearing crowing, until Jeremy was put into freezer camp and then it suddenly got VERY quiet out there!! LOL...BRING ON THE CROWING (or better yet...bring on the eggs!! I'm still not getting ANY)!!

I don't know about you guys, but I am SO ready for some of this 70 degree weather - so long as it stays DRY! I am in DESPERATE need of a good drying up from all the rain/ice/melted ice/rain we've had lately! My poor white maran is no longer white but a weird brownish grey and I think the only one who is REALLY loving this crazy wet weather are the ducks! Sadly, they have found our natural underground spring (a small pool in the yard near the coop that is always wet) - well, they apparently prefer this as their drinking/bathing spot and have made the little hole slightly bigger...I suspect by the time spring is here, the hole will be a mini pond!! LOL I will be SO glad to get some eggs again...I do miss hearing the egg song and stacking my nice eggs in my basket and bringing them into the house...Someone tell my girls since they are at POL they need to get on it!! LOL

Have a great day everyone!! Enjoy the weather!!

NH.. are you getting no eggs as in ZERO? How many laying age hens are left? Would not be surprised if they are laying in the woods.

No eggs as in ZERO!! I have had to buy eggs for DD for the past 3 months and it's KILLING me!! I have 3 that are POL and 3 (the 3 that survived freezer camp) that went through a "mini molt" and stopped laying to never take it back up - this has been about 6 months ago. My 3 at POL came "of age" right as late fall/early winter hit, so I am not sure if they are just holding off until spring or what?!? I thought they might be laying in the woods, but most of the chickens have been staying under the porch or close to the house - the guineas are the only ones I ever see in the woods or the fields. I dunno, but it makes me want to cry!!
